The Lion King’s IMAX Run Reaches $12 Million

February 19, 2003

After Attack of the Clones made a disappointing (but marginally profitable) $8 million in IMAX theatres The Lion King’s success is much needed good news for IMAX. Still mostly relegated to documentaries and “edutainment”, DMR technology is allowing regular format movies to be converted to IMAX. Still without a runaway hit, it looks like they can at least be profitable in the long run. Especially when you factor in the long running time of many IMAX movies, 2 of the top five movies have been in the theatres for more than 2 years.
