Rosa Parks And The Oscars

March 3rd, 2003

The “mother of the civil rights movement” Rosa Parks, famous for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man in 1955 and prompting a 381 day boycott, may have to refuse a seat at the Oscars. Rosa Parks is the subject of the documentary "Mighty Times: The Legacy of Rosa Parks" which is nominated for an Oscar (Category Documentary - Short Subject). She has been invited to attend the ceremony at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on March 23rd by civil rights attorney Morris Dees. It can be speculated that at 90 years of age, her frail condition may be the primary reason she wouldn’t attend. Rosa Parks will provide a definitive answer later this month.
