Otomo’s Comeback Delayed
June 24th, 2003
Fans of famed manga artist and animator, Katsuhiro Otomo will have to wait a bit longer to see his new work. Steamboy, Otomo’s first feature length animated film in fifteen years had its Japanese release date delayed from October to sometime in 2004. This was due to the greater than expected production demands, especially for the climatic scenes. The delay, while disappointing, was no real surprise since Steamboy has already broken records in Japan. Its $20 million budget and nearly 180,000 cells used were both records in Japan.
This delay should be no problem for Otomo’s fans, who have waited 8 years since production first began, and 15 years since the groundbreaking Anime Akira came out.
