It's Good to be the King!

December 17, 2003

The first figures for Lord of the Ring: Return of the King are in, and they are record breaking. The film earned an amazing $8 million from 2100 midnight showings. That surpasses the previous record of $5 million The Matrix Reloaded took in, however, The Matrix Reloaded needed more than 600 more theatres to do so.

How does this affect box office predictions? Well, it makes breaking the record for biggest Wednesday opening much easier, but it is too soon to tell for other, longer-term records. The midnight showings would be the least affected by the long running time. Stay tuned tomorrow when we'll have the full numbers for Wednesday's box office, after that we'll have a much clearer picture.
