DVD and Blu-ray Releases for February 24th, 2015

February 24th, 2015

This list is going to be a little shorter than I wanted... a lot shorter actually. My Internet Provider decided it would be a good idea to do maintenance tonight, so I was without internet access for several hours. There are two first-run releases that are contenders for Pick of the Week: Big Hero 6 (DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack) and Whiplash (DVD or Blu-ray). The other contender is the Criterion Collection release for Watership Down (Blu-ray). All three are worth owning, but Big Hero 6 is the Pick of the Week.

2015 CFP National Championship Game - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
There are a lot of releases like this coming out this week. Individually, they are not going to be big sellers, but there are so many I couldn't ignore them all.

Beyond the Lights - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is an excellent movie, but it bombed at the box office. I hope it finds an audience on the home market. There are enough extras (director's cut of the movie, audio commentary track, featurette, and more) that it is worth picking up, but not quite enough to be Pick of the Week material.

Big Hero 6 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This movie won the Oscar for Best Feature-Length Animated Film. That sets up some really high expectations. Can it match these expectations? If not, is is still worth picking up? Read our review to find out.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: 52 Pick-Up, Black Sunday, Diabolik Lovers, Eat Drink Man Woman, Fellini Satyricon, God Told Me To, Love Chunibyo & Other Delusions Collector's, The Majestic, The Night They Raided Minsky's, Ten Seconds to Hell, and Tiger & Bunny The Movie - The Rising Combo Pack
There are a number of secondary Blu-ray releases coming out this week, including Watership Down, which deserves its own entry.

Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerers Curse - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
I'm a little surprised this film is selling as well as it is on It's the second direct-to-dvd sequel to a film that wasn't a big hit when it came out nearly 20 years ago. There are still no reviews, which isn't a good sign.

Horrible Bosses 2 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Comedy sequels rarely work out, because comedies rely less on world-building and more on characters and situations. The sequel usually doesn't work, because it is the same characters getting into similar situations. It feels like a remake rather than a true sequel. This is the case with this film. It's not the worst comedy of the year, but it is also not good enough to be worth picking up.

The Intruders - Buy from Amazon: DVD
You know a film is a small release when Rotten Tomatoes doesn't even have a page for it. At least I couldn't find it looking up either the name or Miranda Cosgrove, who stars in the movie.

Italian Americans - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A PBS documentary series about Italian-Americans. Self-explanatory, really. There's another PBS series, Shakespeare Uncovered: Series 2, that is also coming out this week.

Midsomer Murders, Set 25 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A British police procedural show. Fans of the genre know the drill. It is an excellent show, but the price-per-minute is high.

Sons of Anarchy: Season 7 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This show ended on a high note, so fans of the show will be happy to finish off their collection. If you are a fan of the show, but hadn't picked up any of the previous seasons, you can grab a Complete Series Megaset instead.

Sofia the First: The Curse of Princess Ivy - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I might get a screener for this to review. I'm not in the target audience, but it is better than most other shows aimed at the same age group.

Watership Down - Buy from Amazon: DVD and Blu-ray
This is an animated film from 1978 that is based on the children's novel of the same name. However, it isn't a kids movie, not exactly. The film earned great reviews, but has the potential to traumatize kids and / or vegans. I consider that a selling point. Additionally, the Blu-ray has a Picture-in-Picture with the storyboard. I love those tracks. It's a Pick of the Week contender.

Whiplash - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A two-time Oscar winner. The film stars Miles Teller, but the real draw is J.K. Simmons. The reviews are 95% positive and the extras on the Blu-ray are enough to make it a Pick of the Week contender.
