Theater Counts: Ice Age in 3,992 theaters; Star Trek should win weekend from 3,928

Ice Age: Collision Course will be the widest opener this weekend, according to studio reports. The animated adventure sequel will play in 3,992 venues, just ahead of a 3,928-theater debut for Star Trek Beyond. We also have the first official word on the opening theater count for Jason Bourne next weekend.

In spite of Ice Age’s theater count advantage, it is expected to come a distant second at the box office this weekend. That expectation is perhaps one reason why the theater count for Star Trek Beyond jumped from an expected 3,500 as of last week, to over 3,900, while Ice Age only slightly moved the dial from 3,800 to close to 4,000.

Looking ahead to next week, Jason Bourne is expected to debut in over 3,900 theaters next weekend, per Universal. Assuming some growth in that figure over the next week, it could well come out in over 4,000 venues—an impressive start for a live-action film.
