Thursday Night Previews: Wall’s Start is Far from Great with just $970,000

February 17, 2017

The Great Wall

The first numbers for the weekend are in and they are not looking good. The Great Wall earned just $970,000 during its midnight previews, which is significantly less than half of what John Wick: Chapter Two managed just last weekend. Granted, John Wick: Chapter Two was a sequel and those tend to get off to faster starts, while The Great Wall has a Holiday to help boost its legs. On the other hand, The Great Wall’s reviews are much, much worse. We were only predicting just under $19 million during the four-day weekend. We are keeping that for now, but we might have to adjust it lower tomorrow.

Fist Fight only managed $600,000, putting it inline with the $660,000 Dirty Grandpa earned when it opened approximately this time last year. That film made just over $35 million in total and barely more than $11 million during its opening weekend. Fist Fight’s reviews are better, so it should bounce back a little, but our $18 million prediction seems out of reach at this point.

Finally, A Cure for Wellness only managed $300,000. This underperformed The Bye Bye Man’s previews by $100,000. Its reviews are better, but not by enough to expect strong legs over the weekend. We predicted it would struggled with between $7 million and $8 million and for now we are standing by that prediction.
