March 15, 2017

Personal Shopper

Personal Shopper had the best theater average this past weekend earning an average of $19,794 in four theaters. The overall box office champ, Kong: Skull Island, earned $15,867. Raw was the only other film in the $10,000 club with an average of $12,413 in two theaters. Meanwhile, The Sense of an Ending just missed the mark with an average of $9,923 in four theaters.

The best of the rest of the new limited releases was Badrinath Ki Dulhania. The Bollywood film earned $5,671 in 152 theaters. The only other film to avoid the Mendoza Line was My Scientology Movie, which was right behind with an average of $5,590 in two theaters. Suntan and Who’s Crazy were both playing in a single theater each and both struggled with opening weekends of $1,629 and $1,355 respectively. The Ottoman Lieutenant was even worse with an average of $694 in 216 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Kedi has earned $1 million during its box office run so far. That’s a strong result for a documentary.
  • Table 19 got to $2 million before the weekend and it was nearly at $3 million by the end of the weekend.
  • As expected, A United Kingdom got to $2 million before the weekend. It will likely get to $3 million during this upcoming weekend.
  • I Am Not Your Negro topped $6 million over the weekend. Getting to $7.5 million will be difficult.
  • Hidden Figures got to $160 million before the weekend and entered the top 15 for 2016. It has earned more money than Star Trek Beyond, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Jason Bourne, each of which cost more than $100 million to make.
