Theater Averages: Beauty Outshines all Competition with Average of $41,508

March 21, 2017

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast had the best theater average of 2017, so far, at $41,508. This puts it just ahead of Kedi, which opened with $40,103 in its lone theater. The second best average of the week was earned by T2: Trainspotting at $34,115 in five theaters, which is the third best average of the year so far. Song to Song was the only other film to earn an average above $10,000 over the weekend, pulling in $12,640 in four theaters. While Frantz didn’t quite get into the $10,000 club over the weekend, it came close with an average of $9,373. Furthermore, it was a Wednesday release and earned a five-date average of $11,470.

There were only two other new limited releases, but both of them did well. Taipei Story earned $7,333 in one theater, while After the Storm earned an average of $4,647 in six theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Badrinath Ki Dulhania hit $1 million before the weekend and it is already more than halfway to $2 million. Unfortunately, Bollywood films rarely have long legs, so getting to $2 million is not a sure thing.
  • Table 19 reached $3 million early last week and it was halfway to $4 million by the end of the weekend. However, its theater average and theater count dropped drastically last weekend, so it won’t get to $4 million.
  • As expected, A United Kingdom reached $3 million over the weekend and while its theater count has peaked it could still get to $4 million before it is done.
  • It took a long time, but Lion made it all the way to $50 million. This is enough to put it in 65th place on the 2016 chart.
  • Another week, another milestone for Hidden Figures. This time it surpassed $165 million over the weekend. It is in 14th place on the 2016 chart, but there is a massive gap between it and the 13th place film, so that’s as far as it will go.
