Friday Estimates: Aliens Dominate Friday with $15.35 million, Everything’s Okay, Wimpy Not so Much

May 20, 2017

Alien: Covenant

As expected, Alien: Covenant earned first place on Friday’s box office chart. This is a little better than originally predicted, but in line with our adjustment after Thursday’s previews. Unfortunately, it is not all good news. The reviews are 73% positive, which is good, but it only managed a B from CinemaScore, which is low enough to hurt its legs. We’re still going with just over $40 million over the weekend and over $100 million in total, but this might not be enough to be a real financial success.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 was second with $8.80 million on Friday, a 47% decline from last weekend. If it keeps up with last weekend, then it would make $35 million this time around. However, last weekend’s legs were boosted by Mother’s Day, while this Friday was boosted a little bit by the end of school. (Approximated 5% of schools and colleges started summer break this Friday.) While the film likely won’t hit $35 million over the weekend, $33 million is still a great third-week release and enough to become the eighth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reach $300 million.

Everything, Everything opened in third place with $4.72 million on Friday, which is excellent for a film that only cost $10 million to make. It will have little trouble matching its production budget during its opening weekend. Granted, its reviews are only 42% positive, but it earned an A minus from CinemaScore, so that should help.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, on the other hand, is a dud. It only managed $2 million on Friday, while its legs won’t help. It is only scoring 19% positive reviews and its CinemaScore is just a B. The latter result is worse than it looks, because family films generally do better than average. It might not last in the top five over the entire weekend.
