Weekend Wrap-Up: By earning $21.23 million, Boo 2 is the only Non-Disaster Film of the Weekend

The weekend box office was weaker than expected with only one of the new releases topping predictions. Tyler Perry’s Boo 2: A Madea Halloween wasn’t that one film, but it still led the way with $21.23 million. The only other film to top $10 million was Geostorm with $13.71 million, but it lived up to its disaster genre due to its $100 million production budget. Overall, the box office fell 6.5% from last week to $95 million. That decline is positively glowing compared to the year-over-year comparison. Compared to this weekend last year, 2017 was down 25%. Year-to-date, 2017 is now behind last year’s pace by 5.0% or $440 million at $8.46 billion to $8.90 billion. Unless November and December are stellar, there’s no way 2017 is going to catch up to 2017.
Tyler Perry’s Boo 2: A Madea Halloween is the latest instalment in the Madea franchise so there’s not a lot to say, as the franchise has been around since 2005. It earned $21.23 million during its opening weekend, which is more than it cost to make. While its reviews are terrible, it did earn an A minus from CinemaScore, so its legs shouldn’t be too bad. Anything above $50 million domestically should be enough to keep the studio happy.
Geostorm earned $13.71 million during its opening weekend. This is $3 million more than expected. Normally earning about 25% more than expected would be a reason to celebrate, but Geostorm cost $100 million to make, so this is a complete disaster. Furthermore, the film’s reviews are just 11% positive, while its CinemaScore is just B minus, so it likely won’t have good legs. Then again, it is quite clear the studio gave up on this film a long time ago.
Happy Death Day fell to third place with $9.36 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $40.67 million. This is a sharper decline than anticipated, but that hardly matters, as it will likely break even by this time next week.
Blade Runner 2049 came within a rounding error of expectations with $7.35 million over the weekend for a total of $74.20 million after three weeks of release. It is on pace for $90 million domestically and about $250 million worldwide. This is enough to save face, but not enough to really break even.
Only the Brave rounded out the top five with $6.00 million in 2,577 theaters. Its average was barely over the Mendoza Line with $2,329, so unless its holds on to the majority of its box office next weekend, it will lose a lot of theaters when Thor: Ragnarok opens two weeks from now. The reviews are great at 90% positive, while it earned a solid A from CinemaScore, so it could actually have good enough legs.
The Snowman opened in eighth place with $3.37 million in 1,812 theaters for a theater average of $1,861. Its reviews are just 8% positive, while it only managed a D from CinemaScore, so it will likely collapse next weekend. This will lead to a massive decline in theaters the first weekend of November.
Same Kind of Different as Me missed the top ten with $2.59 million in 1,362 theaters. It also missed the Mendoza Line, meaning many theater owners will be looking to drop it as soon as contractually able to. Even if that weren’t the case, it likely would have struggled in the long-run, as there are still only six reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and only one of them is positive.
The Foreigner just missed the top five with $5.79 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $23.18 million. The film is going to break even solely on its international numbers, so this is a fine run so far. The only other member of the sophomore class was Marshall, which fell 51% to $1.48 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $5.43 million. Maybe it needed to open deeper in Awards Season to help at the box office.
