Home Market Releases for November 28th, 2017

The Wrong Guy

This is the week after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which explains why there are so few new releases on this week’s home market release report. That said, there are some worth checking out. Haikyu!! is one of the best sports Anime titles ever made, but only the Premium Box Set is coming out this week and its just too expensive. Logan Lucky is one of the best wide releases of the year, but the DVD / Blu-ray doesn’t have enough extras to be the Pick of the Week. I was tempted to give Pick of the Week to Long Time Running, but while it is amazing the DVD / Blu-ray doesn’t come out till Friday. Likewise, I finally finished the review for MST3K: Season 11 to celebrate the renewal, but it came out way too long ago to be Pick of the Week. That leaves The Wrong Guy as my Pick of the Week. It has no reviews and the DVD / Blu-ray only has a commentary track, but it’s an underrated film in my opinion, and a Canadian film, so it gets Pick and Puck of the Week.

Cary Grant Double-Shot
Father Goose - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Operation Petticoat - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Two Cary Grant films set in World War II. I’m not sure it is coming out this week, as Amazon suddenly has them marked as “currently unavailable”. If you do have a chance to grab them, they are both good. However, Operation Petticoat is the better of the two movies, while Father Goose has the better extras. That said, it is close in both regards.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The Gilmore Girls revival did very well earning nearly 90% positive reviews and was supposed to wrap up the popular show the way the creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, wanted. However, it was the most binge-watched show on Netflix last season, so it has a really good chance of getting a season 2. On the other hand, Netflix DVDs / Blu-ray rarely have a lot of extras.

Logan Lucky - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
This is one of the best-reviewed films of the year, but its release strategy was... unique. The director, Steven Soderbergh, didn’t want to deal with a major studio and decided a more limited advertising budget would be enough to promote the film. This turned out to be a mistake. It is still absolutely worth picking up and even a contender for Pick of the Week, but it doesn’t quite earn that title.

Long Time Running - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The Tragically Hip is one of the biggest bands in Canadian history. They had nine number one album hits in Canada, including six in a row. On the other hand, they never had a top 100 album in the United States. Sadly, Gord Downie, the lead singer and songwriter, very recently passed away after a battle with terminal brain cancer. This DVD / Blu-ray is a celebration of the band and its reviews are stunning. Not only is its Tomatometer Score nearly 90% positive, but the average is 8.9 out of 10. That’s close to Oscar-worthy. (Not enough Awards Season voters will have seen it for it to actually earn any nominations.) There is some additional footage on the DVD / Blu-ray and the overall package is clearly worth picking up and a serious contender for Pick of the Week.

Misery: Collector’s Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
One of the best Stephen King movies ever made. The new Blu-ray has a few new extras and it is certainly worth picking up if you don’t have it yet. I’m not convinced it is worth the double-dip, on the other hand.

MST3K: Season 11 - Watch on Netflix: Video on Demand
Late last week, Netflix announced they renewed MST3K for another season. As a celebration, I decided to review the final five episodes of the revival. Does the season end on a strong note? Is the overall season worth a Netflix subscription? Read our review to find out.

Trolls Holiday - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This is the best-selling new release of the week. It’s a slow week.

The Wrong Guy - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Dave Foley plays a man who was up for a promotion, but when he doesn’t get it, he threatens to kill his boss. Later, he goes to his boss’s office to confront him again, only his boss is dead. He assumes everyone will blame him, so he takes off and goes on the run. However, the security footage shows the real killer and the cops have no interest in him. It’s a fugitive movie where no one is chasing the fugitive. The film went nowhere at the box office, but I watched it when it came out on the home market and I enjoyed myself. It’s not high art, but it is slapstick comedy fun. The only extra is an audio commentary track, but this is better than expected, given the film’s box office struggles.

Christmas Wedding Planner - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Just in Time for Christmas - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD

One Christmas Eve - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD

Silver Bells - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD

A Very Country Christmas - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
There are a handful of Christmas releases this week, none of them have any reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. A lot of them are still selling really well compared to the other new releases.

Tulip Fever - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Woodshock - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The Woman in Red - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
There’s not much in the way of secondary Blu-ray releases this week. Death Laid An Egg has no reviews, but its overly complicated plot and Giallo sensibility means it is the Blu-ray I’m most interested in.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
No 3D releases this week.

4K Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Logan Lucky - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
You really don’t need to see Logan Lucky in 4K to enjoy it.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Full House - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
How did this show last this long? Why did it get a revival? Why is the revival still around?

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
All Saints - Reviews - Video on Demand
Detroit - Reviews - Video on Demand
Kingsman: The Golden Circle - Reviews - Video on Demand
There are only three secondary VOD releases this week. However, one is about to become a $100 million hit, while the other two earned great reviews, so it is quality over quantity.
