Theater Averages: Name Finds its Calling with $103,233

November 28, 2017

Call Me by Your Name

Call Me by Your Name dominated the theater average chart with an average of $103,233 in four theaters. It is the first film of the year to reach the $100,000 mark on the per theater chart. Lady Bird was the previous yearly champion with an average of $91,109, also in four theaters. The second-best average of the week was earned by Darkest Hour at $43,752 in four theaters. Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story earned $18,742 in one theater; that’s amazing for a documentary. The overall number one film, Coco, earned an average of $12,742. The only holdover in the $10,000 club was Justice League, as it pulled in $10,143.

There were only a few other new limited releases and only The Passion of Joan of Arc did well with $6,408 in its lone theater. The Man Who Invented Christmas only managed an average of $2,162 in over 600 theaters. Explosive was the only film to miss the Mendoza Line and it came close with an average of $1,676 in 33 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Wonderstruck hit $1 million. That’s as far as it will go, but that still a reason to celebrate for a limited release.
  • The Man Who Invented Christmas opened with over $1 million during the five-day weekend, meaning it hit the $1 million in the process.
  • The Killing of a Sacred Deer topped $2 million before the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
  • Loving Vincent made it to $5 million over the weekend and $6 million is still within reach. It’s not a sure bet to get there, but it has a reasonable chance.
  • Roman J. Israel, Esq. expanded semi-wide and that helped it get to $6 million by the end of the weekend. I’m not sure how many more milestones it will get to, on the other hand.
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri expanded nationwide reaching $7.5 million over the weekend. Its theater average is still high enough to warrant further expansion.
  • Lady Bird beat expectations by topping $10 million over the weekend. It will enter the top 100 on the domestic yearly chart very soon.
