Monday Estimates: Black Panther Now Over $200 Million in Three Days

February 19, 2018

Black Panther

Disney posted updated weekend projections for Black Panther this morning, and if your jaw was dropped already, it’s time to pick it up and drop it again. The film’s box office fell just 9% on Sunday to an estimated $60.096 million, giving it the second-best Sunday in box office history, just fractionally behind The Force Awakens’ $60.553 million. That pushes Panther’s three-day opening weekend to an estimated $201.797 million, making it the fifth film in history to top $200 million on opening weekend.

There are a couple of other telling statistics that reveal just how strongly the film is performing…

First, its $60 million-plus box office on Sunday makes it only the third film with a comparable opening to earn more on Sunday that it did on Friday, if you exclude Thursday-evening previews. The other two are Deadpool, which earned $34.6 million on Friday and $42.6 million on Sunday; and Beauty and the Beast, which earned $47.5 million on Friday and $48.3 million on Sunday. Panther earned $50.6 million on Friday, excluding previews, so rose about 20% from Friday to Sunday. Only Deadpool has done better, and then only by a small margin, at 23%. If Panther does slightly better than Disney’s current estimate on Sunday, it could top that performance.

The second remarkable statistic is that Black Panther is only the third wide release to average over $50,000 per theater on opening weekend. The other two are The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. I think it’s fair to say everyone expected Black Panther to be big on opening weekend, but no-one expected it to be Star Wars big.
