International Box Office: Ready Remains First, Nears $400 million Worldwide

April 10, 2018

Ready Player One

Ready Player One remained in first place on the international chart with $83.8 million on 33,787 screens in 65 markets for totals of $297.1 million internationally and $393.6 million worldwide. The film’s best new market was Germany, where it opened in first place with $2.88 million on 866 screens. Its best market overall was China with $43.45 million in 17,738 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $162.26 million.

A Quiet Place opened in second place with $21 million in 40 markets. The film’s biggest opening was in the U.K., where it earned third place with $3.6 million. Its best opening was in Mexico, where it earned first place with $2.29 million over the weekend for a total opening of $2.67 million. The film isn’t doing as well internationally as it did domestically, but that really doesn’t matter, because it was such a huge hit domestically.

Peter Rabbit slipped to third place with $19.37 million on 10,492 screens in 80 markets for totals of $161.35 million internationally and $274.63 million worldwide. The film’s biggest new market was France, where it opened in second place with $2.48 million on 550 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.96 million. However, its biggest market overall was the U.K., where it remained in first place with $4.45 million in 1,174 theaters for a total of $45.21 million after four weeks of release. This is equivalent to $250 million here, given the relative size of the two markets.

Pacific Rim: Uprising slipped to fourth place with $12.35 million in 65 markets for totals of $212.35 million internationally and $267.14 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend. Its best market was China, where it is down to $3.91 million over the weekend for a total of $98.40 million after three weeks of release. The film is failing to live up to its predecessor and it is rapidly running out of new markets to make up the lost ground.

Hindi Medium is the latest Indian film to find success in China. It opened in second place with $11.61 million over the weekend for a five-day opening of $21.32 million. This is already more than it made in its home market. In fact, it is more than the film made in the rest of the world combined.

Black Panther fell to tenth place with $4.5 million in 43 markets for totals of $634.5 million internationally and $1.300 billion worldwide. The film became just the 10th film to earn $1.3 billion worldwide and will overtake The Last Jedi before the end.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle opened in its final market, Japan, earning $3.19 million on 417 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.98 million. This is a good opening for that market, but likely not good enough to push the film to $1 billion worldwide. It will get close and if the worse thing you can say about the film’s box office run was, “It didn’t quite get to $1 billion.” then you know the film was a huge success.
