Theater Averages: Eighth Grade earns an A plus

July 18, 2018

Eighth Grade

Eighth Grade had the best theater average of the year with $65,949 , topping the previous champ, Isle of Dogs, by nearly 10%. On the other hand, Isle of Dogs opened in 27 theaters vs. 4 for Eighth Grade. Second place went to Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot with an average of $20,835 in four theaters. The only other member of the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, which pulled in an average of $10,629.

There were several other new limited releases and a couple of them did well. Dark Money and Milford Graves: Full Mantis earned $8,100 and $7,407 respectively. Both films were playing in one theater a piece. What Will People Say was also playing in one theater earning $4,024. Soorma was the widest limited release of the week playing in 50 theaters and it did okay with an average of $3,367. Poor Boy struggled with an average of $2,730 in four theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Hearts Beat Loud hit $2 million early in the weekend, but it likely won’t get to $3 million.
  • Whitney also reached $2 million over the weekend and it also likely won’t get to $3 million. Its theater average is just too low to hold onto enough theaters to get there.
  • Leave No Trace earned more than $1 million over the weekend helping it top the $1 million and $2 million milestones in the process. I don’t think it will expand significantly beyond this point, but it should reach a few more milestones regardless.
  • Three Identical Strangers got to $2 million over the weekend and its theater average is high enough that it should continue reaching milestones for weeks to come.
  • Sorry to Bother You expanded into just over 800 theaters helping it get to $5 million in just two weeks of release. It could expand further, although it likely won’t expand truly wide. Regardless, it has an excellent shot at becoming one of the best limited releases of the year.
