Weekend Estimates: Joker Takes a Bite Out of Venom

October 6, 2019

Joker

Joker is not only dominating the weekend, likely earning more than the rest of the films in release combined, but it will also top Venom’s October record by more than $10 million. Its domestic weekend estimate is $93.5 million, which is only dwarfed by its international debut. The film is projected to earn $140.5 million on 22,500 screens in 73 markets during its opening weekend. Highlights includes A $16.3 million debut on 1,418 screens in South Korea, which is a record opening for Warner Bros. in that market. It wasn’t able to break records in the U.K., but is still very impressive at $14.8 million on 669 screens, while it also cracked $10 million in Mexico ($13.1 million on 4,684 screens) and Russia ($10 million on 1,907.

Abominable is slipping a little faster than expected, but, if estimates hold, it will still earn $12.0 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $37.8 million, meaning it is on pace to become a midlevel hit. It is doing better internationally with $24.6 million in 44 markets over the weekend for a still early total of $38.5 million so far. The film has yet to open in many major markets, including the U.K. and Spain, where it opens this weekend, while it doesn’t finish its international run until partway through next year.

Downton Abbey is matching our predictions nearly perfectly with an estimated $8.0 million during its third weekend of release. Its running tally is $73.63 million, meaning it will likely miss $100 million on its own, but it could enough that Focus Features will give it a push to get there. The film is trailing in its domestic run internationally with $6.6 million in 37 markets over the weekend for a running tally of $61.8 million. However, it has yet to open in a number of major markets, including Italy, which I suspect will be a big market for this movie. It should have little trouble getting to $100 million internationally and perhaps even $250 million worldwide.

Hustlers will come within a rounding error of expectations with an estimated $6.3 million for a total of $91.3 million after four weeks of release. As expected, it is not doing as well internationally, but it did open with a strong $1.9 million in Sweden for an international total of $18.7 million so far.

It: Chapter Two did get to $200 million over the weekend and is earning $5.36 million over the weekend for a total of $202.21 million after a month of release. It is doing about the same level of business internationally with $5.6 million in 78 markets for totals of $234.5 million internationally and $436.7 million worldwide. It has yet to open in Japan, so it is not done just yet.

War is earning a spot in the top ten with $1.58 million over the weekend, despite playing in just 305 theaters. Getting into the top ten might help the word-of-mouth spread outside its target demographic. The only other limited release of note was Pain and Glory earning of just over $160,000 in four theaters for an average $40,022.
