Weekend estimates: Wonder Woman stays top, but continues to decline steeply

January 10, 2021

Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman 1984 will easily top the box office chart again this weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday morning, but it will fall 45% from last weekend. That’s a significantly larger decline than the rest of the films in the top 12, and The Croods: A New Age will overtake it in a couple of weeks if this trend continues. Wonder Woman’s total will stand at $32.6 million after today, compared to Croods’ $36.9 million, so there’s a strong probability that the two films will end up roughly tied at the domestic box office.

The studio projections for the weekend are all ahead of our model’s predictions, which is partly because we added an adjustment to account for this being the weekend after New Year’s weekend. This seemed like a sensible precaution ahead of time, given that the theatrical market is usually heavily influenced by the ebb and flow of national holidays, but it’s increasingly clear that holidays and seasonal variations aren’t really at play right now. With people being strongly discouraged from group gatherings, there’s not much to make one weekend different than any other, and reactions to the state of the pandemic are clearly by far the biggest driver of the market right now. That’s a lesson learned for us, and we won’t be making similar adjustments for President’s Day or MLK Day. Hopefully things will be getting closer to normal by Memorial Day, but that feels a long way off right now.

International Markets

Wonder Woman 1984 is nearing $100 million internationally, with Warner Bros. reporting a total of $98.8 million outside North America so far, and $131.4 million worldwide. Australia remains the highlight, with another $1.5 million this weekend and $14.5 million to date. The top markets in total for the movie so far are North America with $32.6 million, China with $25.3 million, Australia with $14.5 million, Taiwan with $8.4 million, and Japan and Brazil tied at $4.8 million.

The Croods: A New Age will pick up $5.1 million internationally (a little ahead of Wonder Woman’s $4.7 million) this weekend for a total of $91 million overseas. Its global total is now $127.8 million, with its two top markets this weekend Russia/CIS at $2.162 million, for $10.717 million in total; and Australia, with $1.622 million this weekend for a total of $10.239 million.
