Theater counts: Tom and Jerry opens wide

After a week with no new wide releases, Tom and Jerry opens in theaters across North America and on HBO Max this weekend. We will not have an official theater count until estimates are released on Sunday, but it should arrive in around 2,200 locations, given that The Little Things came close to that a month ago.

The Croods: A New Age, is playing in 1,912 theaters, which is only one less than its total last week in spite of the new competition for family audiences. Our model predicts The Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah and Wonder Woman 1984 will all lose theaters to give Tom and Jerry some room, with Wonder Woman likely to suffer the most.

New in limited release this week is My Zoe and The Vigil, showing in 237 and 55 theaters respectively.

Looking ahead to next week, Boogie opens wide in an estimated 1,250 theaters, while Walt Disney unveils the highly anticipated Raya and the Last Dragon nationwide in theaters and as a premium release on Disney+. Both films will have the chance to open in New York, which is permitting theaters to reopen on March 5. It’s not clear how many locations will manage to open on that date, but even a few in one of the biggest movie markets should help boost receipts.
