Theater Counts: Smooth sailing for Mortal Kombat for the second consecutive week
April 29, 2021
Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train continued to provide a breath of fresh air to the movie industry last week by exceeding all expectations. The two blockbuster films combined for a domestic opening weekend of $55 million—and Demon Slayer now stands at $460 million worldwide... Coupled with the success of Godzilla vs. Kong, it appears as though things are definitely on the upswing. Sadly, official theater counts haven’t been released for any of these films, but we do have our model’s predictions, and official counts for all films reporting.
The only new wide release this week is Separation. The horror film starring Rupert Friend and Violet McGraw (a joint venture between Open Road Films and Briarcliffe Entertainment) debuts in 1,751 theaters this weekend. In limited release this week is Limbo, releasing in 208 locations.
Looking ahead to next week, Wrath of Man will open in an estimated 2,300 theaters.
Here are this weekend’s theater counts (Warner Bros. and Funimation titles’ counts are estimates):
