Theater counts: Doctor Strange repeats as Firestarter and Family Camp open wide

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

After an impressive opening week at the box office, Doctor-Strange in the Multiverse of Madness holds steady with its opening theater count of 4,534 theaters. The latest Marvel feature snagged an eye-opening $187.4 million in its opening weekend and currently enjoys a domestic cume of just shy of $223 million, with a worldwide total of $532 million. The film’s opening weekend places it comfortably in 11th on the record opening weekends chart, just ahead of Incredibles 2’s $182.4 million and just behind Avengers: Age of Ultron’s $191 million.

This week isn’t solely about Doctor Strange however as we see two other wide releases make their way into theaters in the PG family comedy, Family Camp and the sci-fi horror reboot Firestarter. The former from Roadside Attractions arrives in a moderate 854 locations. The latter from Universal Pictures, which stars Zac Efron and Ryan Kiera Armstrong, releases in 3,412 theaters. The Jason Blum and Akiva Goldsman produced Firestarter is based on the novel by Stephen King and follows a father who must protect his daughter after she develops pyrokinesis and is hunted by a secret government agency that intends to capture and control her. Firestarter will be available in theaters and for home viewing on Peacock streaming. Rounding out the top five this week is The Bad Guys, in 3,783 locations, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 3,116 theaters and lastly, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore in 2,578 cinemas this week.

Once again, there is no shortage of limited releases to hit the big screen this week. Per usual IFC Films has an entry this week in The Innocents. The Norwegian supernatural thriller film will be available in 32 theaters. Also new in limited release this week is On the Count of Three and Montana Story, opening in 19 and four locations respectively. The former follows two down and out best friends with a suicide pact, who decide to live one last day before they kill each other. The latter, which stars Haley Lu Richardson and Owen Teague follows two estranged siblings who return to their family’s Montana ranch in order to look after their ailing father.

Looking ahead to next week we see the North American launch of Downton Abbey: A New Era. The long-anticipated sequel from Focus Features which opened in the United Kingdom on April 29, is set to open in about 3,400 locations stateside next Friday.
