Synopsis

The 90-city tour was one of the most successful Comedy Concerts in history. DVD Sales: New Releases have the Courage to Stand up to Holdovers

January 31st, 2012

It was a mixed week on the home market as far as new releases were concerned. On the one hand, four of the top five spots on the DVD sales chart were new releases. On the other hand, they were the only new releases to reach the top 30. Courageous was the best of the bunch selling 381,000 units and generating $6.47 million in opening week sales. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 17th, 2012

January 16th, 2012

It's a slow week on the home market; there are four first run wide releases on this week's list, which is not bad, but only one of those, The Ides of March, earned reviews that were even remotely good. Unfortunately, there are only a few smaller releases that are worth checking out, so it's a pretty shallow week as well. As far as Pick of the Week is concerned, The Ides of March on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack win that honor, practically by default. More...

Per Theater Chart: What a Weekend!

September 27th, 2011

Weekend earned nearly perfect reviews, but I'm still surprised by its box office strength as it earned $27,245 in one theater during its opening weekend of release. The Man Nobody Knew was next with $15,411, also in one theater. Machine Gun Preacher also topped expectations with an average of $11,283 in four theaters, but its reviews suggest it won't last long. Pearl Jam Twenty earned an average of $10,245 in ten theaters over the weekend, and including the special showing it had earlier in the week, it already has close to $400,000. More...

Weekend Estimates: Lion King Just Holds Off Moneyball and Dolphin Tale

September 25th, 2011

In a surprisingly strong weekend for September, The Lion King will enjoy a second weekend at the top of the chart, although only by a narrow margin over new entries Moneyball and Dolphin Tale. Disney's animated classic will take in about $22 million this weekend, and now looks set to pass $400 million in lifetime domestic box office before its theatrical run is over, and it has a shot at topping Spider-Man to take a place in the all-time top 10. More...

Per Theater Chart: Restlessly Waiting for Awards Season

September 21st, 2011

Restless won the race to the top of the per theater chart with $15,467 in its lone theater. However, given its reviews, I don't think the word of mouth will be there to help it expand. The Lion King was second with an average of $12,941. The Mill and the Cross was the only other film to cross $10,000 at $11,354 over the weekend and $15,443 from Wednesday through Sunday. More...

Per Theater Chart: Laughing at the Competition

September 14th, 2011

There was only one film to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart, but it did it with style. Kevin Hart: Laugh at My Pain earned just under $2 million in 98 theaters for an average of $19,474. I wasn't expecting it to earn $2 million in total. More...

Weekend Estimates: Contagion Has a Healthy Start

September 11th, 2011

Having four wide releases on what is traditionally the slowest weekend of the year never seemed like a good idea. And so it proved for three of the films. The fourth, however, can lay claim to decent numbers this weekend. Contagion posted a very respectable estimated opening of $23.1 million, according to Warner Bros.' on Sunday, with a per theater average of over $7,000. That put it well ahead of The Help, which scored $8.7 million in second place. Warrior will be third with $5.6 million from 1,869 theaters -- not a bad opening, but a $3,000 per theater average won't encourage significant expansion, no matter how good word of mouth is for the film. The other two wide openers would have loved to come even close to that number though. More...

Turning Limited Releases Inside Out

September 9th, 2011

There is a lot of excitement when it comes to specialty films and potential Awards Season players, because it's time for the Toronto International Film Festival. Unfortunately for those not in Toronto, your choices are a lot more limited. Fortunately for those not in Toronto, you are not in Toronto. (I'm Canadian, so I'm constitutionally obligated to make fun of Toronto.) There are a few new limited releases earning good reviews, but far more that critics are a lot less kind to, and none seem destined for significant box office success. More...
