DVD and Blu-ray Releases for June 28th, 2011

It's a bit of a madhouse in terms of DVD and Blu-ray releases this week: Amazon.com has more than 400 listed. That said, a lot of them are catalogue titles that would barely warrant a mention during a slow week. The most intriguing first run release is Sucker Punch on Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy Combo Pack, but while I think it's worth picking up, it's appeal is limited enough that it is not worthy of the Pick of the Week honors. Fortunately, one of the catalogue titles is clearly Pick of the Week material. In fact, Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Edition - Blu-ray is one of the most anticipated releases in the history of Blu-ray. More...

DVD Releases for December 30, 2008 - Part I

This week is a mess because we are dealing with DVDs released on the 26th, the 27th, and the 30th. Additionally, we are dealing with the latest two waves of Paramount Blu-rays, so there are a lot of spotlight reviews this week. (Although when it comes to those particular Blu-rays, I have previously reviewed nearly half of them previously, and I have seen more than half of the rest, so it was easy to review.) It was so easy, in fact, I was able to get a couple reviews done in advance, which lead to a record number of spotlight reviews. There are more spotlight reviews this week than the previous four weeks combined. Needless to say, the column had to be split into two, with the second part found here. As for the best of the best, Serenity - Blu-ray easily won the DVD Pick of the Week, while Duckman - Season Three and Four is the DVD Pick of Next Week. Also worth grabbing are Event Horizon on Blu-ray, Ghost Town on either DVD or Blu-ray, Greek - Chapter Two, and The Truman Show on Blu-ray More...

2008 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part II

This week on our annual Holiday Gift Guide we look at TV on DVD releases. But not every TV on DVD release, as we will be focusing on either Full Series releases and First Season releases. If a show is on season four of a seven season run, it's unlikely that you will need me to tell you if it will make a good gift or not. After all, you know the recipient better than I do and either they are collecting the show or they are not. However, those that are making their DVD debut, or are ending it with a Full Series Megaset, can make great gifts for people who would otherwise not have seen the show. More...

2008 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part I

Thanksgiving is over and that can only mean on thing, Christmas shopping! And that means it is time for our annual Holiday Gift Guide. This week we will look at some of the recent releases, as well as some soon to be released Blu-ray films. More...

Contest - Flying High

YES! Firefly has been officially announced for Blu-ray, and as promised, we will be giving away multiple copies of the movie including one this week. Or to be more accurate, I will. That prize is not part of the regularly scheduled box office prediction contest and is just a bonus I'm throwing in myself. (When I said I was going to make sure there was a Serenity sequel even if I had to fund it myself, I wasn't kidding.) However, we are getting ahead of ourselves. The target film for this week's box office prediction contest is The Pineapple Express and in order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of The Pineapple Express. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Reno 911 - Season Five, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet - Best of Ricky and Dave, and Tai Chi Master on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of Reno 911 - Season Five and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet - Best of Ricky and Dave. Additionally, one additional entrant will be chosen at random to win a copy of Reno 911 - Season Five. Finally, whoever comes closest, regardless if they go over or under, will win a copy of Firefly on Blu-ray. Two important notes: I will be pre-ordering the Blu-ray as soon as the winner is selected, but it won't ship until November. Secondly, since I will be Amazoning this Blu-ray directly to the winner, I need the full address and phone number or I can't send the prize your way. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2007 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part III

This week, the Holiday Gift guide discusses movies as its theme, but not just any movie can get on this list. This is for smaller movies, ones that might have slipped past most people's attention. The top ten movies of the year would also make great gifts, but you don't need me to tell you about them. (Except to say The Simpsons Movie doesn't come out on DVD and Blu-Ray until Tuesday.) Here we have independent films, foreign films, and yes, a few Canadian films. ... Okay, more than a few Canadian films. More...

2007 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part I

It's the first of December. (At least it was when I was writing this intro the first time. I was only going to do a dozen or so releases, but the list ballooned well out of control.) This week kicks off our second annual Holiday Gift Guide with a look at some high definition releases, because nothing says holidays like a format war. More...

DVD Sales - TV on DVD Dominates Sales Chart

With the fall TV schedule about to start, TV shows on DVD dominated both the new release list and the sales chart, including The Office - Season Three taking first place. That release sold 410,000 units for $13.11 million in sales. More...

DVD Sales - Wild Hogs Ride Into the Sunset

New releases weren't big sellers this week as Wild Hogs remained in first place despite falling more than 66% during its second week of release. It sold an estimated 738,000 units for a running tally of 2.94 million. That works out to $46.96 million in sales, including $11.80 million this past week. More...

DVD Releases for August 21, 2007

This is another week without a first run release that demands to be purchased. That is not to say there are no first run releases coming out tomorrow, just none that need picking up. Fortunately, TV on DVD and Special Editions were able to pick up the slack. From the former category we have Ugly Betty - The Complete First Season and House, M.D. - Season Three that were contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. From the latter, we have House of Games - Criterion Collection and Serenity - Collector's Edition. And the winner is... Serenity - Collector's Edition. Buy it early, buy it often, and maybe we'll have a sequel before too long. More...

Da Vinci Dominates Home Market

The Da Vinci Code led a large group of new releases, taking top spot on the charts with $11.05 million in rentals while it also topped the sales chart with ease. More...

Cars Lap Competition on Home Market

Cars led a group of new releases that dominated the sales charts this week, however, it had to settle for a very close second place on the rental charts. Leading the way was Mission: Impossible: III with $9.31 million while Cars took in $9.24 million. More...

New Releases are Nearly Impossible to Find on Home Market Charts

New releases were nearly shut out of the charts this week, however, one new release that did make the charts was Mission: Impossible: III, which earned top spot with $9.08 million. More...

DVD Releases for April 18, 2006

It's another really slow week for DVD releases, with only a few that even come close to being contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. The best of the bunch and the one mostly likely to please a wide audience is Mrs. Henderson Presents - Buy from Amazon. On the other hand, the one I'm looking forward to the most is Event Horizon - Special Collector's Edition. Meanwhile, I'll probably pick up Remington Steele - Season 3 for Mother's Day, whenever that happens to be. More...

Is the Box Office entering an Ice Age?

We have the first event movie of the year coming out this weekend. Yes, I realize I said that when V for Vendetta came out, but this time I mean it. In all seriousness, if Ice Age: The Meltdown doesn't have the best opening of the year, then the 2006 box office is pretty much sunk. More...

Major Announcement - New Contest Starting Monday

Home Market: Second Wedding not quite as Opulent

It was a busy week for new releases with three newcomers in the top five, but that didn't stop Wedding Crashers from keeping its home market crown. The DVD was able to top the charts for the second week in a row with $10.29 million, which was down 24% from last week and enough to lift its total to $24.18 million after just two weeks. More...

Crashing the Home Market

We had a new number one this week as Wedding Crashers took top spot on both the rental and the sales charts. The film earned $13.57 million in combined rentals, $12.80 million of that from DVDs. More...

Virgin Enjoys a Threepeat

For the third week in a row, The 40-Year Old Virgin was the leader on both the rental and the sales charts. It ended the year on top with $8.51 million over the week, which was down just 1% from last week and enough to push its total to $27.48 after three weeks. More...

Virgin\'s Still Number One the Second Time Around

The 40-Year Old Virgin remained it top spot on both the rental and the sales charts showing its domestic run was no fluke. The film have the best week-to-week drop-off in the top ten as it slipped just 16% to $8.60 million over the week and $18.97 million during its two week run. More...

3.7 Million are Virgins No More

The 40-Year Old Virgin not only did it lead the way on the rental chart bringing in $10.18 million in combined rentals, ($9.82 million from DVDs and $370,000 from VHS), but it also led the way in sales with 3.7 million units sold. Sales totaled $65 million in its opening week. To put this in perspective, the home market release made more than $75 million during its opening week, which is more than the film earned during its first three weeks of theatrical release. More...

DVD Releases for December 20, 2005

For those looking for last minute gifts (and you can't get much more last minute than this), there are many, many former wide releases coming out this week. Unfortunately, only one such film earned even reasonable reviews, and that was Serenity - Buy from Amazon, which is our DVD Pick of the Week. Also earning that honor is Party of Five - The Complete Second Season. More...

Not Quite Like Heaven

Just Like Heaven dipped at the box office falling out of the top five with $4.53 million on 1609 screens in 30 markets over the weekend for an early total of $18.04 million internationally. Its best opening was in Belgium where it debuted in second place with $252,000 on 40 screens over the weekend and $290,000 in total. International Details: Flightplan has Bumpy Landing

Flightplan fell out of the top five with $5.13 million on 2,430 screens in 38 markets for a total of $94.65 million on the international scene. It did fall from second to sixth on this week's charts, but it should still reach $100 million by this time next week. Its best market of the weekend was the U.K. where it remained in second place with $2.14 million on 416 screens for a two-week total of $6.59 million. More...

Smiths Fight Their Way to the Top

Mr. and Mrs. Smith won the race to the top of the weekly rental charts and nearly had the same total as last week's winner. Over the week the film pulled in $15.44 million in combined rentals, just $100,000 behind War of the Worlds opening. More...

Her Shoes Fall out of Fashion

Here's this week's round-up of international box office numbers.

In Her Shoes fell out of the top five this week with $3.95 million on 2,050 screens in 23 markets for a $30.60 million international box office. The film held up amazingly well in Spain, dropping just 8% to $810,000 on 290 screens, but it wasn't as fortunate in France where it lost more than half its opening, earning $400,000 on 293 screens, falling out of the top ten in the process. It suffered a similar fate during its third weekend in the U.K. where it was down 55% to $736,000 on 268 screens, but the film already has $7.06 million there, which is better than its domestic run if you take into account the relative sizes of the two markets. More...

War\'s World Leader

War of the Worlds easily won the race on the rental charts with $15.54 million in combined rentals, which is one of the best results of the year. This is more of a surprise than it may first seem, since people usually buy blockbusters like this and not rent them as much. More...

Zorro Leaves its Mark

The Legend of Zorro fell from second to sixth this week and because of that its quest from $100 million internationally took a serious hit. Over the weekend the film pulled in $4.20 million on 4062 screens in 62 markets for a running tally of $80.73 million. In France the film fell 57% to $1.01 million over the weekend and $14.80 million during its four-week run while it had a similar drop-off in Spain where it was down 56% to $475,000 over the weekend and $9.10 million in total. The box office was less kind in Russia, (down 68% to $136,000); Germany, (down 70% to $232,000) and the U.K., (down 83% to $120,000). More...

In South Korea the film fell 43% to $753,000 on 114 screens, which is better than average for the market. And the film is also doing well in Italy adding $764,000 on 268 screens to its $2.67 million running tally there, $700,000 in France for a $8 million box office, and $462,000 in Japan for a $7.0 million box office. More...

Millions Satisfy Their Sweet Tooth

It was a busy week on the home market with three new releases in the top five including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which came in first. More...

Chicken\'s Little Start on the International Scene is Lucrative

Its best market was kid-friendly Mexico with $3.1 million on 600 screens, which is about on par with its opening domestically. On the other hand, the film broke records in Malaysia with $477,000 on 40 screens. Other results include a first place debuts in Russia with $1.1 million on 197 screens and in Taiwan with $463,000 on 18 screens, (including previews). More...

Sith Storm to the Top of the Charts

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith was able to take first place on the rental charts this weekend, but its $7.64 million in DVD rentals was rather anemic. However, this is all part of the Fanboy Effect, those that were interested in seeing the movie bought it instead of renting, which kept the rental figures low but boosted the sales figures. Combined sales for the DVD and game were $210 million worldwide in its first week of release, but there were no breakdowns given either by market or the split between DVD and Game sales. More...

Zorro Steals the Show

With The Legend of Zorro earning a nearly worldwide release this past weekend, and the imminent release of another juggernaut, there was little room for other releases this weekend on the international scene. More...

Batman Beats New Competition

Despite suffering a 34%, second week drop-off, Batman Begins was still able to retain its hold on the home market crown, which is just further proof of the weakness in the rental market. This week the film added $7.85 million to its $19.88 million, two-week total. More...

Other markets include $360,000 in the U.K. for a $3.6 million total there and $140,000 in Poland for $1.1 million. Add it up and you have $4.2 million for the weekend and $9.6 million in total. More...

Brothers are not so Grimm

The Brothers Grimm dropped just 35% during its second weekend in France adding $2.1 million to its $5.7 million total there. In Germany, the film performed a nearly the same level falling 36% to $950,000 over the weekend and $2.9 million during its run. Overall the film made $4 million for a $27.8 million runny tally and that places it fourth on this week's charts. While the film struggled domestically, it is doing quite a bit better on the international scene, and could show a profit sometime during its home market run. More...

Internationl Round-up: Company Nine Reaches $14 Million

Company 9 remained in first place in Russia, its home market, down just 13% to $4.3 million for a running total of $14.3 million, which is well ahead of Revenge of the Sith's final box office in the market (which was just shy of $10 million). More...

Amityville Scares Slump Into Submission

The Amityville Horror won the race for top spot on the rental charts with $8.78 million in DVD rentals and $520,000 in VHS rentals for a combined total of $9.30 million. This result, plus the rest of the competition, helped pull the rental market out of its extended slump. More...

Corrected - Wallace and Gromit Capture Top Spot

It was a bad weekend at the box office. Granted, the box office hit $104 million over the weekend, up 17.6% from last weekend, but it was down 2.9% from last year, making this a weak start to October. The fall box office is still ahead of last years pace by 4.9% at $581.8 million, but year-to-date, 2005 is off by 6.5% at $6.608 billion. More...

The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming!

Company 9 opened in its native market of Russia with a stunning $5.0 million over the weekend and $6.25 million including the midweek numbers, which is better than Revenge of the Sith's opening in that market. This also means there were two films that did so well in their local markets that they managed to place in the top five overall. More...

Yard Goes Long

The Longest Yard again won the race on the home market with $9.11 million in DVD rentals and $800,000 in VHS rentals for a total of $9.91 million for the week. That's down a miniscule 4% from its opening weekend and strong enough for a $20.46 million two-week total. More...

Full House for new Releases

Five new films are opening in varying degrees of wideness from 3,645 theatres for Wallace and Gromit to 969 for The Gospel. All while all five could have an impact at the box office, the real question is whether the overall market can rebound from last weekend's setback. More...

Serenity\'s Start is Nothing to get Excited About

The mini-winning streak the box office was on came to a crashing end this weekend as the total box office was only $88 million, down 11.4% from last weekend and a stunning 21.7% from last year. Of course, this time last year was the first weekend in October, so the year-to-year drop-off is to be expected. Year-to-date, 2005 is behind 2004 by 6.6% at $6.479 billion to $6.934 billion. But at least the Fall is still ahead by 7.7% at $453 million, and at this point you have to take whatever good news you can find. More...

Studios Hoping the Box Office isn\'t too Serene

Today is the last day of a very successful September. Unfortunately, this does mean the year-to-year gains we've been seeing will come to an end. This time last year was the first weekend in October and all three wide releases combined won't top the debut of Shark Tale. But hopefully that will be a momentary setback for an otherwise healthy Fall box office. More...

2005 Preview: September

September is the prime dumping ground for movie studios, where the films that just didn't work get ditched to die an undignified death. So why are there no less than five movies opening wide that look like they should be reasonably good? Either the studios are trying to counteract the poor reputation September has, or I have really bad taste in movies.

This month is very difficult to predict for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fluidity of the release schedule with several films on the bubble for wide releases. In fact, there are almost as many films that may or may not open wide in September than there are films with a solid release schedule. Predicting what a film will earn without knowing if it will open wide is tricky because you have to figure out how much it would earn if it opens wide, how much it will earn if it goes the limited route, and what are the odds it will open wide versus a limited release. This resulting weighted average is lower than a similar prediction for a movie that is known to be opening wide, which makes the month look even worse that it otherwise would. More...

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Here the list of this week's releases, a couple of new sites and few updates.
