Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

DVD Rentals - People Like You, Man

August 26th, 2009

The same two new releases that led the way on the sales chart this week led the way on the rental chart. However, they finished in the opposite direction with I Love You, Man generating 50% more revenue than 17 Again. More...

Contest - Early Trick or Treating

August 21st, 2009

It's the final weekend in August and in many respects the final weekend of summer. Looking at potential number one films, we have two horror sequels both opening in an estimated 3,000 theaters. That makes picking which one will be the target for in this week's Box Office Prediction Contest a bit of a toss-up. We're going with Halloween 2 since Halloween made more than any of the Final Destination films, so it should open first. Maybe. It might be tricky this week. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Halloween 2. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of The Soloist on Blu-ray. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons on 2-Disc DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD Sales - Witch Wins Race

August 18th, 2009

There were only five new releases to chart this week, but three of those reached the top five. This includes Race to Witch Mountain, which sold 763,000 units earning $13.35 million during its first week on the home market. More...

DVD Rentals - Obsessed with the Race for First Place

August 18th, 2009

The same two new releases that took the top two spots on the sales chart this week were also able to take the top two spots on the rental chart as well, but in the other order. Obsessed came out on top with 27% more rentals than Race to Witch Mountain, but it is common for kids movies to do better on the sales chart than the rental chart. More...

DVD Releases for August 18th, 2009 - Part II

August 18th, 2009

It's that time of year again. It's getting closer to the start of the new TV season, which means there is a flood of TV on DVD releases this week. And next week. And all next month. While there are several TV on DVD releases that are worth picking up, like Dexter - Season Three, there are no releases this week that combines an excellent show plus excellent extras, and therefore there are none that rise to the level of DVD Pick of the Week. However, while there are not a lot of top tier releases, there are plenty of total releases and this week's list had to be split into two. The first part can be found here. More...

DVD Releases for August 4th, 2009

August 3rd, 2009

A rather slow week for new releases with very few real first run releases that stand out. The best releases on this week's list are Dollhouse - Season One on DVD or Blu-ray, as well as Watchmen - Three-Disc Director's Cut Blu-ray, but both of those came out in weeks past and are on this list because the screener arrived late. The best from this week is Flight of the Conchords - Season Two, which is the DVD Pick of the Week. However, if you are Canadian, you have to grab Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy on DVD; it's your patriotic duty. More...

Wolverine Win Weekend, Can't Take Down Iron Man

May 4th, 2009

Wolverine Ready to Slice Up the Competition

May 1st, 2009

Summer is finally here, and everyone wants to know if 2009 can keep up its blazing pace. I'm going to say no, simply because the law of averages says the box office should return to the mean. That could start this weekend and last year's top film will be very tough to beat. More...

Moviegoers Can't Stay Away

April 28th, 2009

The final weekend of April is usually slow, but that was not the case this year, as nearly every film in the top five beat expectations, sometimes by large margins. That helped the overall box office total climb by 5% from last weekend to $114 million. More importantly, that represents a leap of 25% from the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has now made $3.06 billion, which is 17% above last year's pace, and that is a phenomenal number. The real test starts this weekend, as 2009 goes head-to-head with 2008's record-setting run, but if it can run even, it will be seen as a major victory. More...

Weekend Estimates: Obsessed Shows Thrillers Can Sell

April 26th, 2009

After a string of poor results for thrillers, audiences showed they can still have an appetite for the genre this weekend. Obsessed, starring Beyonce Knowles, opened with an impressive $28.5 million, according to Sony's Sunday estimate. Although dwarfed by the opening of Fast & Furious just a few weeks ago, that's still one of the top 10 weekends ever in April (see chart). More...

Not a bad week for movie sites, and there are no movies on this week's list that have no presence on the internet, although a couple don't have full sites. Box Office Obsession

April 23rd, 2009

It's the final weekend before the start of the summer blockbuster season, which means there are not a lot of prime films coming out. Studios don't want to risk A-list films when they only have one week to grab as much box office as possible before they are crushed by the competition. Last year's releases were better than expected, and 2009's winning streak over 2008 is in jeopardy. Not only that, but that could be an omen for things to come, as I'm not sure there are as many monster hits this summer as there were last summer. More...

2009 Preview: April

April 1st, 2009

April is a transition month. At the beginning it is strong, but as we near May, the looming competition is just too great and that scares away the big-ticket releases. That said, there are still a few films that could reach the century mark this month, and it does look stronger than last April and that will help 2009 extend its lead in the box office race. More...

More...
