DVD Sales: New Releases Were Expendable
January 16, 2013
There were not many new releases to reach the top 30 on the November 25th edition of the DVD sales chart. This is not a surprise, as it was the Thanksgiving Sales weekend and holdovers tend to dominate the chart. Brave remained in top spot with 1.59 million units / $27.28 million during its second week of release. At this point, it had sold 3.75 million units and generated $61.79 million, which was enough for sixth place for 2012.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted rose second place with 681,000 units / $11.27 million for the week for a total of 2.43 million units / $41.26 million after six weeks of release. Dr. Seuss' The Lorax rose to third place with 651,000 units / $2.60 million for the week giving it totals of 4.11 million units / $64.23 million after nearly four months of release. Bridesmaids was released on DVD last year, but it rose to fourth place this week with 501,000 units / $4.89 million for the week. In total, the film has sold 5.01 million units / $66.34 million, which is amazing. Rounding out the top five was The Hunger Games with 500,000 units / $4.77 million for the week. After three months of release, the film has sold 6.65 million units / $112.92 million, which was the best for 2012.
The best new release was The Expendables 2, which opened in eighth place with 332,000 units / $4.31 million. This is only a fraction of what the original earned. The only other new release to chart was Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups, which landed in 16th place 185,000 units / $3.15 million. Again, this is a fraction of the original's opening.
