The Good Shepherd led a flock of new releases earning $8.66 million. This was only a small, small margin ahead of the second place Pursuit of Happyness, which added $8.48 million to its two-week total of $18.43 million.

It's another busy week with dozens of releases on this week's list (including four spotlight reviews).
As for the cream of the cop, there were a few interesting choices with two top contenders for DVD Pick of the Week: Volver - Buy from Amazon and The Lost Room - Buy from Amazon.
It was a close call, but the supreme cool of The Lost Room helped it win out in the end.

There was only one member of the $10,000 club this week as Factory Girl pulled in nearly $90,000 in 3 theaters for an average of $29,159.
However, An Unreasonable Man came awfully close with $9,813 in its lone theater.

The last weekend of the year normally brings with it several Oscar contenders, and this year it was no different. With the sheer number of high profile Oscar hopefuls, there's no surprise that so many were able to top $10,000 on the per theater.
Leading the way was Pan's Labyrinth with more than $500,000 in just 17 theaters for an average of $33,449.
Children of Men was just behind with an average of $31,313 during its first full weekend of release.
Notes on a Scandal was well back but still performed very well with more than $400,000 in 22 theaters for an average of $18,840.
Letters from Iwo Jima slipped a mere 1.31% to $17,586 and is shaping up to be a bigger hit than its companion film, Flags of Our Fathers.
Dreamgirls expanded into a semi-wide release and earned more than $14 million in 852 theaters for an average of $16,549; this is better than Chicago ever did, but that film showed better legs.
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer did well with an average of $12,360; it expands into more than 250 theaters this Friday, but that could be as far as it goes if it shows any sign of weakness at the box office.
The final film to top $10,000 was Venus, which dipped less than 4% to $11,443.

Dreamgirls fell 40% during the second weekend of its road tour, but it still earned an incredible $228,000 in three theaters for an average of $75,879.
There were three other films to crack $10,000, all of them new releases.
Leading this pack was Letters from Iwo Jima with just under $90,000 in 5 theaters for an average of $17,819.
This is a better start than expected after the disappointing run by Flags of Our Fathers and if it earns a few more nominations, it could expand wide later on.
Another Oscar hopeful, The Painted Veil, placed third with an average of $12,771. Finally there was Venus, which started its run with $35,000 in 3 theaters for an average of $11,868.

There were no films able to crack $10,000 on the per theatre charts this week, but one did come close. Inland Empire, an experimental film by David Lynch
, opened in Boston on the weekend and took in $27,508 in its 3 theatres for an average of $9,169. Correction - We have been informed that the film was only playing in 2 theatres and not 3 giving the film a per theatre average of $13,754. Sorry for the error.

Not a single new release was able to top $10,000 on the per theater chart this week; in fact, none even came close.
But two holdovers were able to accomplish that feat.
Leading the way was Volver with an average of $12,675 in 30 theaters, while The History Boys managed $10,359 in 8.

Volver returned to the top of the per theater charts for the third time in its four week run.
Over the 3-day portion of the weekend it earned an average of $17,071 in its 30 theaters and the movie is on pace to top Talk to Her as the biggest grossing film in Pedro Almodovar's career.
Second place went to Dhoom 2: Back in Action with a very impressive average of $15,540 in 63 theaters.
Even if the film sees the usual step drop-off for niche market films, the distributor has to be happy with its run. The History Boys didn't make history, but they did earn $100,000 in 7 theaters over the weekend for an average of $14,400.
The final film to make it into the $10,000 club was Two or Three Things I Know About Her with $10,764 in its lone theater.

Bobby finished on top of the Per Theater Chart this weekend after taking in nearly $70,000 in two theaters for an average of $34,520.
That was more than $10,000 above its nearest competition, Volver, which pulled in an average of $24,095 during its third week of release.
For Your Consideration placed third on the charts with an average of $16,174, which is a really good start, but still well below the average opening for Christopher Guest's previous mockumentaries.
In fourth was the first of two wide release to top $10,000 as Casino Royale scored a very impressive $11,891 in 3,434 theaters.
The re-release of Two or Three Things I Know About Her earned $11,214 in its lone theater, while Flannel Pajamas brought in $11,069, also in one theater.
Finally we have the overall box office champ, Happy Feet, with an average of $10,918.

Volver fell a tiny 14.41% during its second weekend of release while it easily won the per theater race with an average of $33,842 in five theatres.
The only other movie to top $10,000 was the overall box office leader, Borat, with an average of $11,017 in its 2,566 theaters, which is simply amazing.

Just a trio of films in the $10,000 club, but they are managed that feat by a huge margin. Leading the way was Volver with just under $200,000 on 5 theaters for an average of $39,541. This is actually lower than the opening per theater average for Pedro Almodovar's previous two films, but his biggest opening ever. Second place went to the overall number one film, Borat with $31,607 while last week's per theater average champion, Babel, came in third with $26,264 despite a huge increase in its theater count.

Only five limited releases this week, only one of which has serious mainstream appeal. That film, Volver
, is the odds on favorite to win top spot on the Per Theatre Charts while has a real shot at $10 million or more by the time its theatrical run winds down.

climbed into 6th place on the international charts, the best placing the film has earned. It had a few openings, the biggeset being a sixth place, $410,000 debut on 89 screens in South Korea over the weekend, and $469,000 in total. On the other hand, the film place first in Belgium with $197,000 on 36 screens over the weekend and $226,000 in total and third in Denmark with $102,000 on 32 screens over the weekend and $108,000 in total. Overall it earned $3.44 million on 1423 screens in 22 markets for a total of $31.96 million, which puts it about a week from topping its domestic total.

No new openings left Garfield's A Tail of Two Kitties
down 40% to $5.87 million on 3779 screens in 32 markets for a total of $90.08 million. It was reported that the film broke a record for an animated
film in China with $6.7 million putting it ahead of The Lion King
, which is a strange thing to report since the movie isn't animated
. Sure, it has a CG lead
, but that's not the same. As for the film's prospects for the future, hitting $100 million internationally is academic at this point and with several openings to go, including previews in Australia this weekend, the film could finish with close to the $125 million earned by the original

A first place opening in the U.K. helped You, Me & Dupree shoot up the charts nearly reaching the top five. While it did have to settle for sixth place, its $4.32 million on 914 screens in 8 markets was enough to push its still early international total to $13.01 million. Over in the U.K., the film picked up $3.10 million on 409 screens and that was more than double its nearest competitor. The film opened in Iceland over the weekend earning second place to Garfield's A Tail of Two Kitties with $42,000 in three theatres.

Last minute updates in weekend numbers showed that it was The Da Vinci Code
and not Poseidon
grabbing the final spot in the top five. It was an exceedingly close race with the former film topping the latter by less than $3000 both with $5.68 million. The Da Vinci Code
earned its box office on 4352 screens in 57 markets while Poseidon
needed just 3584 in 48. On the other hand, their running tallies are worlds apart with The Da Vinci Code
leading $507.68 million to $94.72 million. That film became just the 12th film to cross $500 million internationally and is less than $20 million from overtaking Finding Nemo
for 10th place on the international charts.

Scary Movie 4
opened in first place in both France and Spain, helping the film into sixth place overall with $4.89 million on 1512 screens in 22 markets for a total of $74.72 million internationally. In Spain the film made $1.76 million on 400 screens over the weekend and $1.83 million in total, while in France it brought in $3.47 million on 571 screens, but that was for the full week.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
started its international run last weekend but missed the top five with $7.93 million on 810 screens in 8 markets. The film took first place in five markets, including the U.K. with $3.35 million on 415 screens, in Australia with $2.28 million on 221 screens, and New Zealand with $444,000 on 53 screens. This is inline with what the original
opened with in those markets, but with shorter legs due to Sequelitis
it won't have as high a final box office.

finishing in a close second with $3.83 million on 282 screens. That was enough for sixth place on the overall charts and the best per screen average in the top 30.

The final weekend before the start of World Cup saw Volver
become the latest best of the rest finishing sixth with $4.46 million on 863 screens in 5 markets for a total of $27.25 million. The film was again led by its performance in France where it grew for the second week in a row up 14% to $3.02 million on 404 screens for a total of $9.09 million while in Italy it grew by 28% to $1.44 million on 268 screens for a total of $5.61 million after three weeks. In both of those markets the film is on pace to top such worldwide blockbusters as Mission: Impossible 3
, something nobody would have predicted before the start of the summer. Even more impressively, it is about a week away from France becoming the film's most lucrative market topping the $11.94 million it made in its native Spain

The one major change from the studio estimates was in fourth place as the Spanish
, grew by 15% to $4.55 million on 835 screens in 5 markets for a total of $21.33 million. The big surprise came in France where the film was up a massive 41% from its opened taking in $2.64 million on 333 screens for a two-week total of $5.53 million. Meanwhile, in Italy is was down a mere 16% to $1.11 million on 309 screens for a total of $3.30 million.

Mission: Impossible 3
was knocked out of first place by The Da Vinci Code
, but that was not a surprise to anyone. What was a surprise is the lack of staying power Mission: Impossible 3
has exhibited so far; this week the film fell a further 43% o $23.22 million on 6392 screens in 57 markets for a total of $164.32 million. Its best market of the weekend was the U.K. where it added $3.44 million on 445 screens to its total of $23.70 million. However, South Korea is close behind with $3.19 million on 330 screens for a total of $23.22 million. The film only as a few openings left and Japan is the only major player out there so unless a minor miracle happens Mission: Impossible 3
won't reach the heights that its predecessors
