Blu-ray Sales: Expendables Bravely Challenge Holdovers
January 16, 2013
New releases did better on the Blu-ray sales chart than it did on the DVD sales chart, relatively speaking. Brave sold an additional 756,000 units generating $15.59 million more revenue for the week giving it a total of 1.80 million units / $37.33 million after just two weeks of release. This is a very strong start for a kids movie.
The Expendables 2 managed to open in second place on the Blu-ray sales chart, as opposed to eighth on the DVD sales chart. It sold 491,000 units / $8.83 million for the week, which gives it an opening week Blu-ray share of just shy of 60%. The Amazing Spider-Man fell to third place with 342,000 units / $6.47 million for the week and 1.30 million units / $27.86 million after three. That's enough to keep the studio happy, but it is not a monster hit. The Hunger Games earned fourth place with 317,000 units / $5.88 million for the week and 3.07 million units / $61.71 million after three weeks of release. Cinderella returned to the chart in fifth place with 245,000 units / $3.95 million. In total, it has sold 1.49 million units for total revenue of $33.46 million.
The only other new release to chart was Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups, which only managed 24th place with 67,000 units / $1.55 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 27%, which isn't bad for a live action kids movie.
The overall Blu-ray market was much stronger than last week, which should come as no surprise, given the Thanksgiving weekend sales. We saw triple-digit growth with 146% more units sold, although the deep discounts left the revenue up just 88%. Compared to last year, Blu-ray sales were also stronger, with 28% more units sold and 19% more revenue generated. DVD sales were not as robust, with growth from last week, up 104% in terms of units and 63% in terms of revenue when compared to last week, but DVD sales fell 17% in terms of units and 14% in terms of revenue when compared to last year. The overall Blu-ray share improved a little to 35% in terms of units and 43% in terms of revenue. Again, that's a solid number.
There are a number of new releases that should chart next week, led by Men in Black 3; however, it is not a particularly deep week. The same can be said of last year's new releases, which were led by The Smurfs on DVD and Blu-ray.
