August 14, 2019

Nezha

Nezha remains the top draw in its native China and internationally. This weekend, it pulled in $68.97 million for a total of $512.19 million after nearly four full weeks of release. This doesn’t just make the movie the highest-grossing animated film in China, it more than doubles the previous record set by Zootopia. Additionally, it has entered the top five all-time in China, in local currencies, and will soon climb into fourth place over Operation Red Sea.

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw remained in second place internationally with $60.3 million in 66 markets for totals of $223.4 million internationally and $331.8 million worldwide. The film managed first place during its opening weekend in both France and Italy. It earned $7.29 million in 696 theaters in the former market and $2.63 million in 411 theaters in the latter. In both cases, the openings were well behind the most recent installments in the franchise.

The Lion King held on better than the previous two films, down 40% in holdover markets. With its opening in Japan, the film pulled in $51.4 million in 54 markets for totals of $861.5 million internationally and $1.335 billion worldwide. The film earned first place in Japan with $9.3 million over three-days, plus it is the Odon holidays this week, so it should have great legs and that should help it become just the eighth film to reach $1 billion on the international chart.

The Bravest remained in second place in China and fourth place internationally with $31.20 million over the weekend for a total of $166.42 million after three weeks of release.

Line Walker 2 was next with $28.60 million over the weekend for a five-day opening of $62.62 million. Three of the top five films this weekend were Chinese and that’s very impressive.

Toy Story 4 barely remained in the top ten, but it moved closer to the $1 billion milestone. The film earned $9.7 million in 36 markets over the weekend for totals of $570.4 million internationally and $990.0 million worldwide. This includes a first place, $900,000 opening in Poland, which is the third biggest opening for a Pixar film in that market. The film wraps up its international run opening in Germany and Austria next weekend and it should have no trouble getting to $1 billion as a result.
