DVD and Blu-ray Releases for August 17th, 2010

August 16th, 2010

The dog days of summer continue on the home market, but it is the calm before the storm. In this case the storm is a flood of TV on DVD releases, which we are starting to see show up in earnest. This is both good news and bad news. On the one hand, there are plenty of top notch releases coming out over the next few weeks. On the other hand, reviewing a full-season TV on DVD release takes a long time, which means my schedule will be packed for the next month or so. At least I get screeners for free, while consumers will see their wallet under assault week after week. The best selling release of the week is Dexter: Season Four, which is also the easy choice for Pick of the Week. I'm not sure if the DVD or the Blu-ray is the better deal, but regardless which format you choose, it is worth picking up. More...

DVD Releases for February 17, 2009 - Part I

February 17th, 2009

This felt like a slow week to me, but looking at the list there were 15 spotlight reviews, which is a huge amount for one week. There are a large number of DVDs worth checking out, but looking at the top of the list, I think Christopher Titus - Love is Evol is the best DVD coming out this week, and the winner of the DVD Pick of the Week. As has happened pretty much every week this year, there are so many DVDs on this week's list that is had to be split into two. The second part can be found here. More...

DVD Sales - People Turn to TV on DVD as Skies Turn Grey

September 23rd, 2007

The Fall TV schedule helped boost TV on DVD sales as five of the six new releases to chart this week were from that category. This includes the new number one DVD, Grey's Anatomy - The Complete Third Season - Seriously Extended, which sold 365,000 units for opening week sales of $13.51 million. More...

DVD Rentals - People Stay Away From New Releases

September 23rd, 2007

There was only one new release to reach the top ten this week, but there were a couple of changes in the top five. However, not in first place as Blades of Glory earned the hat trick with $5.49 million for the week and $21.99 million after three. More...

DVD Releases for September 11, 2007

September 10th, 2007

Another week where TV on DVD releases dominate the market. In fact, there's no truly wide releases making their DVD debut this week and only a handful of limited releases and special editions as well. So it comes as no surprise that it is a TV on DVD release, Supernatural - The Complete Second Season, that wins the DVD Pick of the Week. More...

Evan Makes Executives Uptighty

June 25th, 2007

The box office was off last year's pace, again, this time it is mainly due to the box office struggles of the overall box office leader, Evan Almighty, which missed lowered expectations. Overall the industry added $132 million over the weekend, which was down 9% from last weekend and 6% from the same weekend last year. It is not time to panic, yet, but if we don't see the box office rebound over the next few weeks, industry talk will switch from the big hits to the misses, and that tends to worsen a depressed market even more. More...

Four Fantastic over Father's Day

June 19th, 2007

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer set a record for best Father's Day opening and overall the box office reached just over $145 million, which was 7% more than last weekend. But that's still lower than the same weekend last year by just over 4%. On the one hand, the box office is still healthy and undoubtedly more records will fall this year. On the other hand, there are some troubling signs and perhaps the irrational exuberance is starting to wear off. More...

Weekend Estimates: Surf's Up for Fantastic Four

June 17th, 2007

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer made a good start at the box office over the weekend, earning $57.4 million, according to Fox's Sunday estimate. That's about on par with the $56 million opening achieved by the first movie in the franchise a couple of years ago, and vindicates the studio's decision to go ahead with a sequel, despite the lukewarm reception to Fantastic Four. If it manages a similar week-to-week performance, Silver Surfer should be another profitable outing, and guarantee another episode for the franchise. More...

Movie Website Updates for June 10 - June 16, 2007

June 17th, 2007

There weren't as many websites on this week's list as in the past few weeks, but there were at least three that earned some consideration for the Weekly Website Award. In the end, that honor went to I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry - Official Site. More...

Summer Looking to Return to Fantastic Ways

June 14th, 2007

After an amazing May, June has shown a bit of weakness and the summer has fallen off its record-setting pace. Things look to turn-around thanks to a super-hero sequel and the buzz suggests Fantastic Four franchise should be up to the task of rescuing a slumping box office, again. More...

2007 Preview: June

June 1st, 2007

With the irrational exuberance of May over, June promises to be a solid month with a number of big hits opening. In fact, every week there's at least one film being released that has a legitimate shot at $100 million at the box office and two films that should hit $200 million. If both Ratatouille and Evan Almighty make it there, we will have six $200 million films so far this year, just two back of 2005's record. On the other hand, there are also a number of films on this month's list that may or may not open wide, and for most of these becoming a midlevel hit will be a chore. More...

Movie Website Updates for May 13 - May 19, 2007

May 19th, 2007

Either it was a really slow week or my Google-Fu is way off, because there's a short list this week. Not only were there very few new / updated sites, but there was nothing that jumped out as award winners. I was tempted to give the award to The Transformers - Official Site just for the new trailer, but I already geeked-out over that site when the first trailer came out. In the end there just wasn't a site worthy of the award this week. More...

2006 Preview: October

October 1st, 2006

It's October, that means there's more hits, more Oscar hopefuls, and more horror films being released. But more importantly, it means September is over. September seemed weaker than normal in terms of top box office draws, but even though October is bound to produce more hits, the box office potential still seems soft. I only see one $100 million movie, but a least a few more might come within striking distance. More...

International Top Five - Little Man a Big Deal

September 24th, 2006

Little Man shot up the charts into sixth place with $5.97 million on 1597 screens in 23 markets for a total of $22.63 million internationally. The film had million dollar debuts in both Spain, ($2.06 million on 250 screens), and Mexico, ($1.04 million on 352), while came reasonably close in Russia, ($960,000 on 217 screens, including midweek numbers). In all three markets, the film placed second on the charts. More amazingly is the film's performance in the U.K. as it dipped just 17% to $1.05 million on 315 screens over the weekend and a three-week total of $5.75 million. More...
