Synopsis

When second-graders Bryce and Juli first meet, Juli knows it's love. Bryce isn't so sure. Beginning that day, and for the next six years, young Bryce does everything he can to keep his outspoken wannabe girlfriend at arm's length...which isn't easy since they go to the same school and live across the street from each other. Smart, dreamy, independent and willing to stand up for what she believes in, Juli is different from anyone else he knows and, frankly, it's a little overwhelming. What's a guy supposed to do when a girl tells him his hair smells like watermelon or wants him to sit in a tree for the spectacular view? There's just no telling what Juli will do next, and Bryce is one guy who'd rather be safe than sorry. Though disappointed by Bryce's unwillingness to see things her way, or even to see the things in life she finds most meaningful, Juli continues to give her potential dreamboat the benefit of the doubt. Until those doubts stack up so high that she finally thinks maybe she was wrong about him. It's just about the same time Bryce starts to think maybe he was wrong about her, too. But is he too late?

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 23rd, 2010

November 22nd, 2010

This Friday is Black Friday, but there's a lull on the home market with not a whole lot of great releases. (This is the usual pattern for Thanksgiving.) The biggest hit coming out is The Expendables, which should top the chart, while there are a number of smaller releases that are in contention for Pick of the Week. The best of these is Metropolis: The Complete Metropolis, which comes out on Blu-ray this week after being released on DVD last week. More...

Romantics Love the Per Theater Chart

September 14th, 2010

There were just a ton of films to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart over the weekend, led by The Romantics with an average of $22,764 in two theaters. However, with its reviews, it probably won't last long. Heartbreak opened in second place with an average of $17,543 in three theaters, but it will likely have better legs. Ahead of Time and My Dog Tulip were neck-and-neck with $12,790 and $12,648 respectively. Finally, Dabangg opened with more than $600,000 in 62 theaters for an average of $10,131. More...

Doing Time on the Per Theater Chart

August 10th, 2010

Leading the way on the per theater chart this weekend was Cairo Time with a healthy average of $13,249 in five theaters. The only other film to top $10,000 on the per theater chart was Avatar. Yes, that Avatar. It played in just one theater over the weekend and earned $10,511. More...

Weekend Estimates: The Other Guys Puts Inception Run to Rest

August 8th, 2010

After three weekends at the top, Inception finally slipped to second place this weekend, thanks to an impressive debut from The Other Guys. The Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg comedy posted a very solid $35.6 million, with a per theater average within touching distance of $10,000. That's the second-best opening weekend for both actors (behind Talladega Nights and Planet of the Apes respectively), and should set the movie up for a good late Summer run. More...

The Disappearance of Limited Releases

August 6th, 2010

There are a lot of films on this week's column, but ironically, it feels like there are not that many true limited releases. Of the eight films below, more than half are opening in a dozen or more theaters. Two of them are opening in more than 200 theaters, which is generally far too many for a limited release. Even more troubling, only half are earning overall positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which could be devastating at the box office. More...

2010 Preview: August

August 1st, 2010

July started out rather well, and while there was a little weakness in the end, four films surpassed $100 million, and another could join them soon. That said, there don't appear to be any $100 million movies opening in August; in fact, there is a chance none will come close. Worse still, August of last year saw three $100 million movies open in the first three weeks. There's almost no chance that will happen this year, so 2010 will likely lose ground to 2009 in the yearly box office race. More...

More...
