New on Disc: Is it Time to say Yes?

August 25th, 2020

Yes, God, Yes

Normally this time of year is a transitional period, as the flood of TV on DVD releases begins to give way to the soon-to-be flood of summer blockbusters. However, the pandemic means there are no summer blockbusters coming out this week, or next week. Or next month. Or the month after that. There are still a couple of bigger TV-on-DVD releases, including The Flash, but the biggest recent theatrical releases hardly made an impact. The best release on this week’s list is Yes, God, Yes, but Amazon has it currently unavailable, so grab it from Target instead.

VOD Releases: (P)Revenge on the Mind

Prevenge

It is another week of quantity over quality on VOD, with only a handful of films earning significant buzz and overall positive reviews. The noteworthy films include of couple of documentaries, Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind and Pretending I’m a Superman: The Tony Hawk Video Game Story, as well as a biopic, Tesla. However, the long-delayed horror flick, Prevenge, could be the biggest hit, as horror films have done well during the pandemic. It doesn’t have the star power Tesla has, but it has better reviews. She Dies Tomorrow

No less than 15 films are debuting in theaters around the country this weekend, which makes this the biggest weekend for new releases since March 13. Eight of the new films are earning decent pre-release buzz, and all but one of those are earning good reviews. I think She Dies Tomorrow has the best shot at earning some measure of box office success, but as a Canadian, it is my patriotic duty to support Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind. More...
