2008 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part III

December 19th, 2008

This week on our annual Holiday Gift Guide we look at limited releases and foreign imports, including a bit of Canadian content. This list was supposed to be online on Wednesday, but it is winter and I live in Canada, and a storm came by and took out the power. I don't know how long it lasted, because as soon as I powered down my computer (battery back-up rocks) I went to bed. I figure if I can't check my e-mail, there's no point in being conscious. Hopefully part four will be online on Sunday. Although there is another storm heading in for that day as well. More...

DVD Releases for December 16, 2008

December 16th, 2008

This week is a confusing one on the home market as there are DVDs coming out on Tuesday the 16th, as usual, and on Friday the 19th, and Sunday the 21st as well. While there are a number of great releases that are spread out over three days, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is the best on any day, and worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week. More...

No Secret Who Tops the Per Theater Chart

September 9th, 2008

There was only one film that earned more than $10,000 on the per theater chart, as A Secret managed to make $37,000 in 3 theaters for an average of $12,378. More...

Per Theater Averages Fall after Summer

September 3rd, 2008

Not a single film reached the $10,000 per theater average mark this weekend. In fact, only Sukiyaki Western Django came close with $9,856 in one theater over the three-day weekend. More...

Summer's Stormy End

September 2nd, 2008

The Dark Knight did what few films in the past decade were able to do, lead the box office charts for four weeks in a row. Now Tropic Thunder is one weekend away from tying that mark. However, it was able to win this weekend thanks to weakness in the new releases, which caused the box office to slump. From Friday to Sunday the industry brought in $98 million, which was 8% lower than last weekend and 17% lower than the same weekend last year. Over four days, $124 million was earned, which was again 17% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2008 fell further behind $6.67 billion to $6.73 billion, but that is still less than a 1% difference and certainly not an insurmountable lead. More...

Laborious Weekend for New Releases

August 28th, 2008

Labor Day long weekend is the final weekend of summer, but far from ending on a high note, it is arguably the slowest long weekend of the year. And this year it looks to be no different, at least in terms of box office numbers. In terms of new releases, well, that's a another story with four movies opening wide, and another expanding wide. It is very unlikely that they will all succeed; in fact, it is more likely that they will all bomb. This makes it very difficult to predict which new release will come out on top, if any do. More...

Men and Women Rise to the Top of the Per Theater Chart

August 26th, 2008

With the end of summer, there are a lot more wide releases than we've normally had during the past three months and this partially explains why we have a tie at the top with both Death Race 3000 - Official Site and The House Bunny - Official Site being judge the best of this week's offerings. Rock Me Sexy Limited Releases

August 22nd, 2008

We have yet to find the sleeper hit of the summer, the limited release that has break out success and outperforms some of its big budget competition at the box office. Films like Little Miss Sunshine are very rare indeed, but every summer we should have at least one limited release with a Waitress-like run. So far, we've not had a film that has managed that, and quite frankly, this weekend represents the last legitimate shot at that feat. More...

2008 Preview: August

August 1st, 2008

Summer usually comes screeching to a halt early in August, usually by the second weekend in August. However, this year we could have a $100 million hit opening each of the first three weeks. Or we could have no $100 million hits opening during the whole month. On the other end, there are a number of releases that probably looked good on paper, but failed to live up to their potential, not to mention a few that could not have looked good, even on paper. (I'm looking at you, Disaster Movie.) More...
