Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.
For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.
We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.
Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Weekend predictions: Weapons and Caught Stealing in close race for the box office crown
August 29th, 2025
It’s looking like another close-run race for top spot at the box office this weekend, although whichever film wins will have the dubious distinction of have the second-lowest earnings of a number one film this year (assuming they top Novocaine’s $8.8-million debut back on the weekend of March 14. The Labor Day holiday on Monday doesn’t usually give movies a big boost at the box office, so this will be a fairly straight-up head-to-head battle between Weapons and Caught Stealing.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for August 14th, 2012
August 14th, 2012
It is an amazing week on the home market, almost. One of the biggest films of all time comes out on DVD and Blu-ray this week; however, fans of The Hunger Games will have to wait till a minute after midnight on Saturday morning to get a hold of the film. I hope my screener will arrive before then. As for releases coming out this Tuesday, there are some that should sell well, but for Pick of the Week, I think Jaws' Blu-ray debut it a top contender. The Hunger Games is also a contender for Pick of the Week. I'm going with Jaws, but it is a close race.

Featured Blu-ray Review: Jaws
August 12th, 2012
Jaws was one of the first movies I ever reviewed. There's little need to add much to my opinion of the movie; I thought it was a must have then and I think it is a must have now. However, this is the film's Blu-ray debut. Does it look and sound good in high definition? And are there any new extras compared to the previous release?
