Home Market Numbers: New Releases Suffer from a KISS of Death

August 26th, 2015

Scooby-Doo and KISS! Rock and Roll Mystery

The new releases for July 21st were WOW levels of bad with not a single first-run release to mention. This left holdovers on top of the combined DVD and Blu-ray chart for July 26th. The Longest Ride remained in first place with 288,000 units / $4.64 million for the week, giving it totals of 788,000 / $13.39 million after two weeks of release. It should have no trouble cracking 1 million units sold, which will keep the studio happy. More...

The Longest Ride

The new releases for July 14th dominated the combined DVD and Blu-ray chart for July 19. In fact, they took every single spot in the top five. The Longest Ride led the way with 514,000 units / $9.03 million Its opening week Blu-ray share was 24%, which is better than the Blu-ray share of a lot of female-centric dramas. More...

Contest: KISS of an Angel

July 30th, 2015

August begins next weekend and there are four wide releases. However, only Fantastic Four has a real shot at earning first place. (Ricki and the Flash should become a midlevel hit, but the other two will likely barely make any noise at the box office.) Because of this, Fantastic Four is the only real choice target film for this week's Box Office Prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for Fantastic Four.

We got a last minute prize this week, so whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Scooby-Doo! And Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery on Blu-ray Combo Pack. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win a copy of When the Checks Stop Coming In on DVD. Finally, we will be choosing an entrant from the group of people who haven't won, or haven't won recently, and they will win a copy of 72%: A Baby Mama Crisis on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

What We Do In Shadows

I can't wait till the TV on DVD releases start coming out. I will finally have something to talk about on the home market. This week, according to, the best-selling new release is What We Do In Shadows. The film earned excellent reviews and did well in limited release, but it isn't a number one chart-topper. The second best-selling new release of the week is Scooby-Doo and Kiss. ... What? From what few reviews I could find, it is better than it looks. That said, the Pick of the Week is still What We Do In Shadows. More...

Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Home Media Magazine.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.
