Synopsis

Soviet Union, 1937. Thousands of letters from prisoners wrongly accused by the regime are burned in a prison cell. Against all odds, one of them reaches its destination, landing on the desk of the newly appointed local prosecutor, Alexander Kornev. He strives to meet the prisoner, a victim of agents of the secret police, the NKVD. A seasoned and upright Bolshevik, the young prosecutor believes it to be a miscarriage of justice. His quest for justice will lead him all the way to the Prosecutor General’s office in Moscow. In the midst of Stalin’s Great Purges, this is the story of a man's descent into a totalitarian regime that dares not speak its name.
