The first of the fall season mega-hits comes out this week with the release of 2012. However, while that movie is getting a major release on DVD and Blu-ray, the film itself is only worth a rental. The best of this week's releases is Ponyo and its Blu-ray / DVD Combo is worthy of the Pick of the Week honor.

Women in Trouble is an ensemble dramedy focusing on the intersecting lives of ten or eleven women in Los Angeles over the course of a day. Sort of like Short Cuts, but with porn stars and call girls, etc. The film's reviews were weak and its box office numbers were even weaker, but there are reports of a sequel called Elektra Luxx in the works and a planned third installment. Does this film have appeal that critics and moviegoers didn't get when it was first released? Does it really warrant a sequel? Or were the critics right?

One of the weakest weeks on the home market for a long while, with only one wide release of note. Granted, Law Abiding Citizen's performance at the box office was much better than expected, but it still only managed to become a midlevel hit. The best of the best is Good Hair, which would be a clear Pick of the Week if the DVD had all the extras they mentioned on the audio commentary track. Alas, there's just the audio commentary track.

We should be seeing a lot of Oscar contenders coming out in the coming weeks, but while there are a couple of films on this week's list that are earning outstanding reviews, most are not.
Some are earning reviews that are good, but perhaps not good enough to survive limited release, while others are not even reaching the 50% positive level.
