DVD and Blu-ray Releases for March 16th, 2010

March 16th, 2010

Not a big week in terms of total releases, but there are plenty of top-notch choices from every category. The best wide release on this week's list is The Princess and the Frog, which is a contender for Pick of the Week. It's not the only contender for that title. In fact, there are contenders in nearly every category, including limited releases (Bandslam on DVD), Foreign Language films (Broken Embraces on Blu-ray), TV on DVD (Breaking Bad: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray), and even Canadian (High Life on DVD). While all are worthy of adding to your DVD / Blu-ray collection, I'm going with The Princess and the Frog on Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack as the Pick of the Week. More...

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Wonderful World

March 12th, 2010

In 1986, Matthew Broderick starred as the title character in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which was a sizable hit at the time and is still loved by many today. A lot of people seemed to think he would be a major box office star. However, while he has found a lot of success on stage (including winning two Tony Awards) most of his movie roles have missed expectations at the box office, even those that were critical successes. His most recent movie was Wonderful World, which opened in limited release, but missed the Mendoza line during its opening weekend before quickly disappearing. Did it deserve a better fate than this? Or can it find an audience on the home market? More...

Avatar Still Filling Theaters

January 12th, 2010

Avatar returned to the top of the per theater chart thanks to its record-breaking weekend result. It earned more than $50 million in 3,422 theaters for an average of $14,701. Crazy Heart was very close behind with an average of $14,004 in 33 theaters, which suggests further room to expand. Likewise, The Lovely Bones could do reasonably well this Friday when it expands after pulling in an average of $12,857 this weekend; however, there is a note of caution, as the film is still playing in only three theaters. Crazy Time for Limited Releases

January 8th, 2010

While this is not a great time of year to release a wide release, it is arguably the worst time of year to release a limited release. Not only is it too late to qualify for the Oscars, but the competition is still very intense from all the Oscar hopefuls that just came out. There are still a few limited releases on this week's list, but most are not earning good reviews. (And a couple haven't earned any reviews.) More...
