Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Theater counts: Can One Battle After Another hold the line against Swift competition?

October 2nd, 2025

One Battle After Another

Newcomer One Battle After Another debuted at the top of the weekend box office, securing $22 million in its opening volley on its way to a box office win. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio alongside a star-studded cast, is expected to relinquish its lead this coming weekend, as a wave of highly anticipated releases hits theaters, most notably Taylor Swift | The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, the latest cinematic spectacle from the pop icon. One Battle After Another

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Infinity Castle dominated the box office for another weekend, pulling in $17.3 million and soaring past the $100 million mark by Sunday. The anime juggernaut held off newcomer Him, which opened with a solid $13.3 million debut. This weekend sees a wave of fresh releases hitting theaters, with two of them emerging as the widest openings, both aiming to dethrone Demon Slayer from its box office reign. More...

Theater Counts: Downton Abbey declares the widest release in its second weekend

September 18th, 2025

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale

The weekend box office saw newcomer, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Infinity Castle, take theaters by storm, slashing $70.6 million in its domestic opening weekend. The latest in the Demon Slayer franchise grossed $84 million for its 6-day domestic total. Its reign may be short-lived though, as a fresh wave of releases arrives this weekend, including romantic fantasy drama A Big Bold Beautiful Journey and psychological sports horror Him. More...

Weekend predictions: Demon Slayer set to break anime records

September 12th, 2025

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle

After a monster opening for The Conjuring: Last Rites last weekend, this weekend will belong to Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, with the anime sensation set to post the biggest opening ever for the genre by a huge margin. $11.4 million in previews already gives it one of the best starts for an animated film from any country, ahead of the likes of Minions: The Rise of Gru, which posted $10.75 million in previews back in 2022. The big unanswered question is how much Demon Slayer will manage for the weekend. That’s still fairly hard to predict, but our model has some pointers… More...

Theater counts: Last Rites still rules: The Conjuring holds top theater count in second weekend

September 11th, 2025

The Conjuring: Last Rites

The weekend box office saw newcomer, The Conjuring: Last Rites, take theaters by storm, sinking its teeth into a franchise-best $84 million in its opening salvo. The horror hit claimed the top spot by nearly $74 million over the competition in just its first three days. But it may be a short-lived reign for Last Rites, as a fresh wave of releases arrives this weekend, including the highly-anticipated latest entry in the Demon Slayer franchise with the release of Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Infinity Castle. Theater counts: Madame Web holds off a flurry of newcomers to remain widest release

February 22nd, 2024

Madame Web

Despite taking a backseat at the box office to Bob Marley: One Love during its opening frame, Madame Web once again finds itself as the widest release in North America this weekend, as it retains (mostly by contractual obligation) its opening count of 4,013 theaters. The superhero film starring Dakota Johnson has earned over $28 million in its first eight days, a figure that has been doubled by One Love, which opened alongside Madame Web on Valentine’s Day. This week witnesses three new wide releases, accompanied by a pandemic era film making its way back into cinemas. More...

Theater counts: Madame Web weaves its way to widest release

February 15th, 2024

Madame Web

After spending its first two weeks as the widest release and at the box office itself, Argylle slips to second this week, despite an increase in showings as it heads into its third week. The spy-action comedy has racked up just over $31 million in 13-days at the domestic box office, while bringing in roughly the same ($32 million) from overseas play. This week, the espionage feature will take a back seat to Valentine’s Day newcomers Madame Web, and the aptly-named considering the holiday, Bob Marley: One Love. More...

Theater counts: Godzilla vs. Kong set to dominate another weekend

April 15th, 2021

Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong will once again lead the pack this week as all newcomers are opening in limited release. The film played in 3,084 locations last week, and we do not expect it to lose much, if any steam this week. The monster action movie has been the biggest film of the pandemic, earning over $70m domestically, surpassing another Warner Bros., Tenet, which ended its run on January 1, 2021 with a domestic gross of $58m. Despite the lack of wide releases this week, the majority of the films on our list have increased theaters this week, showing more positive signs of the movie industry getting back to business. In limited release this week is Monday, starring Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough, showing in 54 locations. More...
