Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Weekend projections: Despicable Me 4 continues good Summer run for family films

July 7th, 2024

Despicable Me 4

Despicable Me 4 is headed for a Friday-to-Sunday opening in the region of $75 million, according to Universal’s Sunday-morning projection. With $47.6 million already earned from Wednesday and Thursday, the animated comedy will end the weekend with over $120 million in the bank. Inside Out 2 is being hurt a little by the competition, but will still put another $30 million into the bank on its fourth weekend (giving it the 12th-best fourth weekend). Once more, family audiences are leading the charge in theaters. More...

Theater counts: Civil War looks to unseat Godzilla x Kong

April 11th, 2024

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

For the past two weeks Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has enjoyed a prime seat atop the box office charts, racking up $140 million from North American ticket sales in its first 13-days. This week, however, will present the biggest test to date for the iconic movie monsters as dystopian action-thriller Civil War arrives in cinemas. More...

Weekend projections: Kung Fu Panda leads great weekend in theaters

March 10th, 2024

Kung Fu Panda 4

This weekend’s new releases are more than living up to their “Po-tential,” led by a fantastic $58.3-million opening for Kung Fu Panda 4—for certain, the second-best debut for a film in the franchise, with an outside chance of topping the original Kung Fu Panda’s $60.2 million if it does really, really well on Sunday. While that will rightfully be garnering the most attention, Imaginary and Cabrini are also doing better than anticipated, and Dune: Part Two will have a great hold in its second weekend. More...

Home Market Releases for October 15th, 2019

October 17th, 2019

Crawl

It’s a really slow week with Crawl being the biggest release of the week, and it wasn’t a monster hit at the box office. Fortunately, it is also the best DVD / Blu-ray release of the week and was the only real contender for Pick of the Week. More...

International Box Office: Wolves Feasts on the Competition with $164 million

August 10th, 2017

Wolf Warriors 2

Wolf Warriors 2 remained in top spot on the international chart with $164 million at the weekend. This is dominated by a sophomore stint of $163.38 million in its native China for a two-week total of $471.94 million. It is already the biggest hit in China, crushing The Mermaid, at least in terms of local currency. It still has a ways to go to become the number one film in terms of the US dollar, but it should get there shortly. More...

International Box Office: Trace is just a Hop, Skip, and a Jump to First Place with $47.37 million

July 28th, 2016

Skiptrace

Skiptrace earned first place internationally with $47.37 million over the weekend for a total opening of $63.04 million. The film dominated the box office in its native China with $45.58 million last weekend for a four-day opening of $61.25 million. This is the best opening in Jackie Chan's career, but unfortunately, it is only getting a limited release here. More...
