Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Theater counts: Scream and Belle debut but Spider-Man retains its grip

January 13th, 2022

Spider-Man: No Way Home

After an 11-year hiatus, Ghostface is back, terrifying the townspeople of Woodsboro. The first film in the Scream franchise not to be directed by Wes Craven, Scream (colloquially known as Scream 5) is helmed by the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, both of whom previously directed 2014’s Devil’s Due, and 2019’s Ready or Not. Through its first four films, between 1996 and 2011, the franchise has earned just over $600 million worldwide. The latest installment, which had a $24-million production budget, brings back franchise veterans Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell along with a cast of new faces. Scream will open in 3,664 theaters. Also opening in wide release this week is the Japanese animated science fantasy film Belle. The film, which was the third-highest-grossing Japanese film of 2021, is set to arrive in an estimated 1,300 locations. More...

Theater counts: Spider-Man has no equal heading into the New Year

December 30th, 2021

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Once again the New Year is right around the corner and per usual, it will be a slow weekend as far as new releases are concerned. That said, most films would be hard-pressed to compete with the phenom that is Spider-Man: No Way Home. The latest film featuring the webbed superhero has stunned the movie world by racking up huge numbers at the box office since its release nearly two weeks ago. The film has to date collected well over $1 billion worldwide, including nearly $537 million domestically and now sits at number 12 in all-time domestic earnings; again after only 13 days. More...

Theater counts: Spider-Man swings into a stellar 4,336 theaters

December 16th, 2021

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters in a big way this weekend, landing in a stellar 4,336 locations. That count places it as the second-widest release of the year, behind No Time to Die’s 4,407 and in front of Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s 4,315. This latest Spider-Man feature again pairs director Jon Watts and Tom Holland (as Spider-Man) from 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home; a film that went on to score over $1 billion worldwide. Spider-Man: No Way Home carries a $200m budget, eclipsing its predecessor by $40m. Also making its theatrical debut this week is Nightmare Alley. The neo-noir psychological thriller directed by Guillermo del Toro is set to release in 2,145 locations. The film, which is based on the 1946 novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham contains a bevy of top Hollywood actors. More...
