The number of DVDs reaching my door is increasing each week (so are the number of ones that are late, or so it would seem). However, while there was a wide selection, the choice for DVD Pick of the Week was easy: Looney Tunes - Golden Collections - Volume 6. ... And
James Bond - Blu-ray Uber Collection, as well as Casino Royale on Blu-ray. One last note, as has happened more often than not, this week's list is split into two. The second part can be seen here.

The last of 2008's monster hits finally hit the home market last week, and it made quite an impact. National Treasure: Book of Secrets opened in first place on the sales chart and had the second best opening for the year with 3.49 million units sold and opening week sales of $55.77 million.

This week's list is dominated by Blu-ray releases. This is not surprising as this is the first week Paramount has released Blu-ray discs after dropping the format last August for an exclusive HD DVD commitment. However, it is another Blu-ray release that caught my eye: the National Treasure Blu-ray Two-Pack. This is the best format has to offer this week, but it is not the best movie coming out. If you want the DVD Pick of the Week, you have to grab Night of the Living Dead Buy from Amazon.

Jodhaa Akbar opened on top of the per theater averages chart with an estimated $1.3 million opening 100 theaters. The only other member of the $10,000 club was U2 3D with an average of $10,198 during its fourth week of release.

The year has been slow for websites with some weeks having no sites at all that were worthy of awards. This makes it frustrating that week we have two sites that could have taken home the Weekly Website Award; it's either feast or famine. But there can be only one winner and this week it is The Spiderwick Chronicles - Official Site.

It's a strange week for limited releases with only two films opening in less than 10 theaters, and one of those in Canadian and it is very, very rare for Canadian films to open in more than 10 theaters. But the list also includes four films opening in more than a dozen theaters and one that even breaks 100 theaters.

2008 got off to a faster than expected start with January helping the year to a 17.5% lead over 2007. It seems unlikely that February will be able to keep up that pace, but there are still enough releases that most avid moviegoers should find something to get excited about. Granted, this is partially due to the combination of the lead year and February 29th landing on a Friday. This means we have five weekends in February this year, something that only happens approximately once every 28 years, which explains the number of films.
