News Stories About The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

Evolution of the Home Market

2006-06-17

It was another incredibly busy week with three new films occupying the top three spots and four of them in the top five. Leading the way on the rental charts was Underworld: Evolution with $8.68 million in DVD rentals.

DVD Releases for June 6, 2006

2006-06-05

It's like the week of the Western with that genre making appearances in nearly every category, Special Edition, Box Sets, TV on DVD. But while there are certainly some that were in the running for DVD Pick of the Week, (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - 2-Disc Collector's Edition, for instance), it was a limited release that is the DVD Pick of the Week. And that film is Sarah Silverman - Jesus is Magic - Buy from Amazon, but I fully admit my pro-Sarah Silverman bias has something to do with this decision.

How Convenient

2006-05-31

During a weekend where records were set at the top of the box office, it was a documentary that won the race on the Per Theatre Charts. An Inconvenient Truth set a record for highest per theatre average for a documentary with more than $280,000 in 4 theatres for an average of $70,333; also, since its debut last Wednesday the film has earned nearly $500,000. Second place when to the aforementioned chart-topping X-Men: The Last Stand, which earned a very impressive average of $27,846 in 3,690 theatres. The final film to top $10,000 was Fanaa, which just missed the top ten on the overal charts with $753,067 in 72 theatres for an average of $10,459. This is much better than expected, but as a niche market film, it is unlikely to have strong legs.

Per Theatre Chart cuts back on Smoking

2006-03-28

Thank You for Smoking was again able to lead the way on the per theatre charts despite expanding from 5 to 54 theatres. In those 54 theatres, the film earned just over $1 million for an average of $18,591. Second place went to the only other film in the $10,000 club and the overall box office leader, The Inside Man, with $10,275.

Another Slow Weekend on the Per Theatre Charts

2006-03-14

For the second weekend in a row, no film was able to top the $10,000 mark. Ask the Dust came the closest with nearly $70,000 in 7 theatres for a per theatre average of $9,826.

Other new limited releases to chart in the top ten were The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things with a studio estimate of $10,000 in 2 theatres (final box office numbers should be in by the end of the week), and Duck Season with $25,000 in 6 theatres for an average of $4,110. On the other hand, Evil struggled with $2,448 in its lone theatre.

Tsotsi Closest to $10,000 Mark

2006-03-07

There wasn't a single film with a per theatre average topping $10,000 this weekend with Tsotsi coming the closest with $65,000 in 7 theatres for an average of $9,326.

Family Comes First... on Per Theatre Charts

2006-02-28

The overall box office champ, Madea's Family Reunion, also won the weekend Per Theatre Average race with $13,688. Second place went to Tsotsi with and average of $12,721 in six theatres.

Fastest earns the Widest Limited Release

2006-02-03

There's a huge selection of limited releases this weekend with nine film's listed below. And that's not counting the nearly half-a-dozen films expanding to take advantage of their Oscar Nods. On a side note, as you can probably tell by how late this story is, I am still sick. Good news, I'm over the worst of it. Bad news, according to the news story I saw, the symptoms should last another one to two weeks. (You know a particular strain is bad when they do a story about it on the local news.)

Not Quite Like Heaven

2005-12-18

Just Like Heaven dipped at the box office falling out of the top five with $4.53 million on 1609 screens in 30 markets over the weekend for an early total of $18.04 million internationally. Its best opening was in Belgium where it debuted in second place with $252,000 on 40 screens over the weekend and $290,000 in total. It also had debuts in Holland with $139,000 on 57 screens over the weekend and $167,000 overall, and in Greece with $116,000 on 24 and Norway with $113,000 on 26. Holdovers include Germany where the film dropped 24% to $890,000 on 273 screens for a total of $2.41 million so far, while in Spain the film fell 39% to 718,000 on 200 screens for a two-week total of $3.09 million.

Producing Results

2005-12-16

There are several films on this week's list, but only one notable release. Two other releases are getting Oscar qualifying runs this week before their regular release. Both these films will get full write-ups then.

Movie Website Updates for December 9 - December 15

2005-12-15

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. We've hit another slow patch for movie websites, which is not unexpected since the most of the new site on this list are for films that open months from now so there's hardly any content, or open during the dead zone that is January. I would say the best of the rest would be King Kong - Official Site, but it is not strong enough to win the Weekly Website Award.

International Details: Flightplan has Bumpy Landing

2005-12-11

Flightplan fell out of the top five with $5.13 million on 2,430 screens in 38 markets for a total of $94.65 million on the international scene. It did fall from second to sixth on this week's charts, but it should still reach $100 million by this time next week. Its best market of the weekend was the U.K. where it remained in second place with $2.14 million on 416 screens for a two-week total of $6.59 million.

Her Shoes Fall out of Fashion

2005-12-04

Here's this week's round-up of international box office numbers.

In Her Shoes fell out of the top five this week with $3.95 million on 2,050 screens in 23 markets for a $30.60 million international box office. The film held up amazingly well in Spain, dropping just 8% to $810,000 on 290 screens, but it wasn't as fortunate in France where it lost more than half its opening, earning $400,000 on 293 screens, falling out of the top ten in the process. It suffered a similar fate during its third weekend in the U.K. where it was down 55% to $736,000 on 268 screens, but the film already has $7.06 million there, which is better than its domestic run if you take into account the relative sizes of the two markets.
