Sunshine Just Misses First Place During Its Home Market Debut

There were nearly a dozen new releases to chart this week, but it was a holdover that took top spot in an extremely close race. The Devil Wears Prada beat out Little Miss Sunshine at $8.88 million to $8.80 million. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest at $8.71 million and Talladega Nights - The Ballad of Ricky Bobby at $8.59 million were very close behind while My Super Ex-Girlfriend debuted in fifth place with $6.91 million.

Just missing the top five was Invincible at $6.51 million. Step Up and All the King's Men finished in ninth and tenth places with $5.24 million and $5.06 million respectively. Lady in the Water was a disappointment in 12th place with $4.03 million, but that was miles ahead of The Wicker Man with $2.90 million in 18th place. Next up was A Scanner Darkly in 21st place; its opening week rentals of $2.62 million was nearly half of its total theatrical run. Way back in 28th place was Jet Li's Fearless with just $2.02 million. Finally, we had a pair of direct-to-DVD releases. American Pie - Naked Mile managed 35th place with $1.18 million while Pledge This! took in just $1.00 for 40th place.

Leading the sales chart for the third week in a row was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Invincible, which had a disappointing debut on the rental chart, came in second place on the sales chart while Step Up earned third. This meant that the top three selling DVDs were all from Disney. Talladega Nights - The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and The Devil Wears Prada were neck-and-neck taking fourth and fifth.

Little Miss Sunshine may have come within $100,000 of take top spot on the rental charts, but it could only manage sixth on the sales charts. With great reviews, many who did rent the movie will likely end up buying it in the coming weeks and that bodes well for its long-term potential. Jet Li's Fearless was nearly the opposite as it barely made a peep on the rental charts but earned ninth place on the sales chart. American Pie - Naked Mile placed 12th while the last new release to chart was Lady in the Water in 15th.
