DVD Sales - Sales Slump

August 27, 2008

New releases were at their weakest in months. In fact, outside of TV on DVD, there were no new releases in the top five, and only one in the top ten. This left Nim's Island at the top of this week's sales chart with 178,000 units for the week, which is the lowest total for a number one film on our list since we've been keeping track of sales. In total, Nim's Island has sold 644,000 units for a two-week revenue tally of $12.05 million. South Park - Season 11 opened in second place with 121,000 units and generated $3.64 million in revenue, which is very strong for a TV on DVD release. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay saw its sales sliced in half, but it still added 102,000 units / $2.34 million for the week for totals of 716,000 units / $16.60 million. 21 slipped just 33%, which is very low for the sales chart; over the past week it sold 100,000 units to lift its totals to 1.16 million units and $21.63 million. Prison Break - Season Three was the second TV on DVD release in the top five, selling 77,000 units for sales of $2.50 million.

There were five other new releases to chart, three of them in the top five. This includes Smart People, which just missed the top five with 65,000 units and $1.32 million. The Art of War II: Betrayal just topped The Wire - The Complete Fifth Season 58,000 units to 56,000 units. However, going by dollars the latter topped the former $2.19 million to $1.17 million. Two direct-to-DVD releases rounded out the new releases with Belly 2 - Millionaire Boyz Club opening in 13th place with 49,000 units / $1.17 million while Felon opened in 16th place with 40,000 units / $795,000.

Blu-ray sales dropped again, falling more than 10% to $6.19 million, which is the lowest weekly total since Home Market Research started publishing weekly numbers at the end of April. However, DVD sales were also lower giving Blu-ray a slight boost in percentages with 5.3% of total sales and 8% of the top 20 comparison.
