International Details - Zohan Messes with the International Box Office

You Don't Mess With The Zohan slipped out of the top five with $7.96 million on 2296 screens in 33 markets for a total of $69.53 million internationally, which is more than Adam Sandler's previous film made in total internationally. This week the film opened in France landing in 10th place with just $816,000, but it was playing on just 171 screens. On the other hand, it added $1.66 million on 335 screens in Spain for a two-week total of $6.45 million.

  • The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor fell from second to seventh with $7.73 million on 4608 screens in 55 markets for a total of $240.37 million internationally. However, while it suffered this week, that was due to a lack of major market openings. That will change this weekend when it opens in China, while it debuts in Australia next weekend and Italy at the end of the month.
  • Hellboy 2: The Golden Army opened in first place in Spain with $2.89 million on 415 screens while it placed second in Australia with $1.56 million on 255 screens. However, while these are strong starts, so far the film has not performed too well during subsequent weeks. For instance, it was down 66% during its second weekend in the U.K. with $1.88 million on 461 screens for a total of $8.35 million. Overall it made $7.46 million on 1471 screens in 19 markets for a total of $44.14 million.
  • Babylon A.D. more than doubled its opening weekend earning $6.91 million on 1521 screens in 10 markets for a total of $10.88 million. However, it opened below $1 million in the U.K. earning seventh place with $986,000 on 311 screens. Additionally, it fell nearly 50% in France adding $1.82 million on 530 screens for a total of $5.37 million.
  • Twentieth Century Boys landed in second place in Japan and tenth place in Japan with $5.77 million on 310 screens over the weekend.
  • This helped to push Ponyo on the Cliff into third place in Japan and 11th place internationally. However, while the film slipped a couple spots, it still managed $4.74 million on 481 screens for a total of $117.46 million.
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars added $4.60 million on 4035 screens in 25 markets for a total of $22.07 million. This includes a fourth place opening in France with $1.60 million on 483 screens while it managed just sixth in Spain with $783,000 on 329.
  • Tropic Thunder earned $3.71 million on 889 screens in 11 markets for a total of $14.33 million after just three weeks of release. This includes a third place opening in Mexico where it made $682,000 on 213 screens over the weekend for a total of $799,000. However, its best market was Australia where it remained in first place while adding $1.66 million on 270 screens for a total of $5.10 million. The next major markets for the film is Germany and the U.K., both of which have their openings in mid-September. I expect the film to do well in both markets.
  • A first place opening in Greece couldn't prevent Wanted from falling to 14th place with $3.56 million on 1194 screens in 34 markets for a total of $138.48 million. In that markets it made $750,000 on 68 screens, while the film has now made more internationally than it has domestically.
  • Step Brothers started its international run with $3.09 million on 362 screens in the U.K., which was enough for first in that market and 15th internationally.
  • Journey To The Centre of the Earth climbed a spot to 16th with $2.92 million on 1356 screens in 18 markets for a total of $53.57 million.
  • The Incredible Hulk is cruising on holdovers adding $2.73 million on 686 screens in 11 markets for a total of $124.73 million.
  • The Strangers made its first appearance in the top 30 with $2.66 million on 507 screens in 8 markets for a total of $8.84 million after two months of release. Nearly its entire weekly total came from the U.K. where it made $2.30 million on 278 screens, which was enough for third place.
  • No major openings caused Get Smart to fall from 11th place to 19th place with $2.40 million on 1046 screens in 29 markets. The lion's share of that came from the U.K. where it made $1.30 million on 442 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.41 million after two. The film has yet to open in France and Japan, among other markets, and could reach $100 million after it does.
  • Detriot Metal City fell to fourth place in Japan and 20th place internationally with $2.34 million 241 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.39 million after two.
  • Bangkok Dangerous climbed to 21st place with $2.25 million on 585 screens in 2 markets for a total of $4.08 million. The film opened in fifth place in France with $1.51 million on 278 screens, while it fell to eighth place in Spain with $749,000 on 307 screens for a two-week total of $2.58 million.
  • Taken climbed into first place in Mexico with $824,000 on 355 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.54 million after two. The film made $2.24 million on 1016 screens in 5 markets over the weekend and now has $43.67 million in total. This is a fine outing, so it is a little confusing why its North American release was push back to January of 2009.
  • Meet Dave fell to 23rd place with $2.02 million on 1417 screens in 21 markets for a total of $30.85 million so far. This includes an opening in Germany where it made $557,000 on 326 screens, which was only enough for fifth place. I was expecting more.
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian fell to ten spots to 24th with $2.02 million on 1859 screens in 21 markets for a total of $273.29 million.
  • Space Chimps returned to the top 30 with $1.72 million on 1051 screens in 11 markets for a total of $12.11 million. This includes a second place opening in Poland, which is a market that is usually very lucrative to animated films. However, here it only made $283,000 on 78 screens over the weekend and $324,000 in total.
  • Sex and the City added $1.50 million on 471 screens in 21 markets to its totals of $248.05 million internationally and $400.56 million worldwide.
  • The Divine Weapon opened in second place in South Korea with $1.39 million on 327 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.46 million.
  • Mirrors earned $1.32 million on 422 screens in 11 markets over the weekend and now has $5.16 million in total.
  • Death Race climbed into the top 30 during its second weekend of release with $1.29 million on 269 screens in 7 markets for a total of $2.68 million. The film has yet to open in a major market, but that changes next week when it debuts in Russia while it opens in the U.K. before the end of the month.
  • La Fille de Monaco, a.k.a The Girl From Monaco added $1.22 million on 393 screens France and now has $4.22 million in that market.
