Looking for a few Good Limited Releases

January 2, 2009

There are only two limited releases this week, and both are about Nazis. They have other similarities, including theater counts and less than ideal Tomatometer scores.

Good - Reviews
Viggo Mortensen stars as a literary professor in 1930s Germany who writes a book about compassionate euthanasia, which is picked up for propoganda purposes by the Nazi party. But his rise in status comes at a cost as he must choose between his continued rise and his Jewish friend, played by Jason Isaacs. Releasing a limited release the weekend after Oscar qualifying ends is a bad sign, and one look at this film's reviews shows why. With terrible reviews, and the huge amount of competition, there's little hope for this film to thrive. Good opens tonight in 2 theaters, one in New York City and the other in Los Angeles.

Defiance - Reviews
Mentioned this release last week, and not much as changed since then. Its reviews are still mixed, and it is unlikely to excel in limited release. It might perform better in wide release, assuming it gets there. Defiance opened in Wednesday in two theaters, one in New York City and the other in Los Angeles, while it is scheduled to expand wide in two weeks.
