International Top Five - French are Cuckoo for Coco

March 25, 2009

Coco opened in France and a couple other, smaller markets taking first place on the international chart with $12.71 million on 902 screens in 3 markets. This includes a first place opening in its native market, where it earned $11.20 million on 871 screens.

Slumdog Millionaire climbed into second place with $11.70 million on 3253 screens in 51 markets for a total of $156.74 million. The film opened in second place in the couple of major markets scoring $2.40 million on just 187 screens in Germany and $1.14 million on 244 screens over the weekend in South Korea and $1.27 million in total. Meanwhile the film added $605,000 on 384 screens in the U.K. for a total of $44.31 million in that one market, which is by far the biggest hit in that market this year so far. The film is not done its international run just yet, and it has already made $293.92 million worldwide on a production budget of just $14 million. Simply amazing.

Okay. This is getting creepy. Four the fourth weekend in a row, Gran Torino remained in third place, this time earning $10.30 million on 2470 screens in 37 markets for a total of $65.39 million after two months of release. The film opened in South Korea but struggled with $245,000 on 133 screens over the weekend for a total of $310,000. It performed better in Brazil with $391,000 on 104 screens, placing second in the process. Holdovers were led by France, where the film added $2.51 million on 481 screens over the weekend for a total of $18.48 million. Meanwhile in Italy it pulled in $1.93 million on 332 screens over the weekend for $5.23 million after two, while in Spain it managed to remain in first place with $1.69 million on 263 screens over the weekend and $8.84 million after four. The film has few major markets left to open in, but its legs suggest it will still reach $100 million internationally.

Marley & Me opened in Spain over the weekend, but was only average with $1.11 million on 303 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.39 million. In the U.K. it remained in top spot, but fell 50% to $3.15 million on 476 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.87 million. Overall it made $8.94 million on 3011 screens in 35 markets for a total of $61.79 million internationally and $204.62 million worldwide.

Rounding out the top five was Männersache with $6.91 million on 675 screens in 2 markets. Of that, $6.74 million on 637 screens was earned in its first place debut in Germany.
