International Top Five: Double-Digits Wins for Avatar

February 24, 2010

As it has for ten weeks in a row, Avatar topped the international box office, this time pulling in $48.49 million on 7247 screens in 71 markets for a total of $1.78 billion internationally and $2.47 billion worldwide. Big news this week came from South Korea where it crossed the $100 million mark before the weekend. In South Korea, it has now reached $103.52 million after 10 weeks of release, including $1.76 million on 242 screens this past weekend. The next market where the film will reach that milestone should be Spain where it made $2.62 million on 352 screens over the weekend for a total of $93.70 million. The movie could also have enough left in the tank to do the same in Australia, where its current total is $94.70 million, but it only managed $1.68 million on 254 screens over the weekend. Meanwhile, it is still in first place in Italy with $3.74 million on 402 screens over the weekend for a total of $79.73 million. In both markets, reaching $100 million might be a little tight, but the Oscars could certainly help along the way.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief rose to second place with $23.46 million on 6689 screens in 52 markets for a total of $68.19 million after two. The film opened in third place in Spain with $1.95 million on 424 screens, while it was down just 1% in the U.K. where it added $2.40 million on 458 screens to its two-week total of $8.43 million. At this point, more than $100 million internationally and $200 million worldwide seems likely, but I'm not sure that will be enough to convince the studio to risk turning the film into a franchise.

Valentine's Day moved in the other direction, falling to second place with $21.81 million on 4994 screens in 59 markets for a total of $71.16 million. The film opened in France, scoring second place with $5.39 million on 408 screens. It remained in first place in Australia, but was down 63% to $2.50 million on 373 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.78 million after two. Meanwhile, in the U.K. it fell from first to fourth, adding $2.49 million on 436 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.22 million after two.

The Wolf Man remained in fourth place with $16.15 million on 4773 screens in 51 markets over the weekend for a total of $47.32 million after two. It opened in second place in Italy with $2.69 million on 391 screens, while it remained in first place in Mexico with $2.02 million on 481 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.05 million after two. On the other hand, it was down 68% in the U.K., with just $1.20 million on 411 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.53 million after two.

The Princess and the Frog returned to the top five with $12.24 million on 3147 screens in 40 markets for a total of $131.43 million internationally. In France, the film grew by 7% to $5.94 million on 700 screens over the weekend for a total of $24.96 million after four. Compared to its run here, this is a much stronger result, as a $25 million box office in France is like a $150 million run here. Meanwhile, in the U.K. it grew 13% to $2.67 million on 504 screens over the weekend for a total of $13.89 million after three, which is about the same as $70 million here.
