DVD Releases for November 18, 2008 - Part I

November 18th, 2008

It's a weird week for the DVD release report. According to Amazon, seven of the top ten releases come from two movies: WALL-E and Tropic Thunder. Add in the Spanish language edition and there are five versions of the former movie coming out this week, including the 3-Disc DVD and the 3-Disc Blu-ray, either one of which is worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week. The overall group of releases feels weaker than last week, but it is more than enough that it had to be split into two parts. Part two can be found here. More...

International Details - 10,000 Scores a Solid Sixth Place

April 13th, 2008

No new openings left 10,000 B.C. tumbling from second to sixth, but it still pulled in $5.83 million on 4302 screens in 61 markets for a total of $155.16 million. This is substantially more than it made stateside while it is about a week away from $250 million worldwide. More...

Contest - Don't Forget to Enter

April 11th, 2008

There's no sure number one hit next weekend, so we are going with Forgetting Sarah Marshall as this week's target film because, well, because it has Kristen Bell in it. In order to win, one must simply predict Forgetting Sarah Marshall's opening weekend. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win Awake on DVD, Tripping the Rift: The Movie on DVD, and A Shot at Love - Season One on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win Inside on DVD, Tripping the Rift: The Movie on DVD, and A Shot at Love - Season One on DVD. Additionally, one additional entrant will be chosen at random to receive the third copy of A Shot at Love - Season One on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

International Details - Step Up Falls Down and Out of the Top Five

April 6th, 2008

Step Up 2 The Streets fell more than 40% last weekend while dropping out of the top five. This was mainly due to the lack of major openings, while its holdover results were merely average. In the U.K. it was down 42% to $2.74 million on 351 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.32 million and in Australia it was down 44% to $1.31 million on 188 screens lifting its total to $5.10 million after two. Overall it added $7.38 million on 1615 screens in 27 markets for a total of $53.21 million, which was enough to lift its worldwide total to more than $100 million. More...

DVD Sales - 101 New Releases

March 17th, 2008

New releases were again plentiful this week with nine reaching the top 30 and three of them sweeping the top few spots. The best of the best was 101 Dalmatians, which sold 1.36 million units during its first week for $21.64 million in revenue. More...

DVD Rentals - Into Second Place

March 17th, 2008

There were only four new releases to chart this week, and only one made it into the top five. This left Beowulf with an easy road to first place as it added $9.02 million in rentals for the week and $19.94 million after two. More...

DVD Releases for March 4, 2008

March 4th, 2008

The first week of the month, but it's not very strong both in terms of raw numbers and in terms of high-profile releases. (There are a surprising number of spotlight reviews, on the other hand.) There are a few releases worth picking up, like 101 Dalmatians - Two-Disc Platinum Edition - Buy from Amazon and My Kid Could Paint That - Buy from Amazon, but none that screamed to be DVD Pick of the Week. More...

Compass Can't Find an Audience

December 11th, 2007

The box office has been soft practically since summer ended, but things are starting to get desperate. This was another week of significant declines at the box office, with overall business of just $82 million. That's down more than 2% from last weekend, and, more significantly, down more than 15% from the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2007 is still ahead in terms of raw dollars, but ticket sales are now trailing last year's pace. More...

Awake Can't Captivate Moviegoers

December 3rd, 2007

There were very few shocks at the box office this weekend as Enchanted remained the dominant film. However, there was an unsettling malaise as the overall box office reached just $85 million. This is barely more than half of last weekend's $162 million holiday-inflated haul, but that was to be expected. What wasn't as expected was the 8% drop-off from the same weekend last year. At the moment, 2007 is ahead of 2006 in terms of box office and ticket sales. However, while a gain at the box office is academic at this point, a slide in ticket sales is likely if things don't turn around. More...

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of November 30, 2007

December 2nd, 2007

Slow week, both in terms of the number of movies being released, and in terms of the quality of the sites. Aaja Nachle - Official Site stood out as the best site, but not good enough to win the Weekly Website Award. More...

Asleep at the Wheel

November 29th, 2007

The weekend after Thanksgiving is the only slow weekend during the entire Holiday Season. So it comes as no surprise that only one movie is opening wide, but it is a bit surprising that the weekend is a weak as it is. More...

Contest - Caught Napping

November 23rd, 2007

There's only one wide release coming out next week and it is the target film in our latest box office prediction contest. However, while there's only one film, there are two copies of two CDs being given away. To win, one must simply predict the box office opening for Awake. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Inside Out by Emmy Rossum and Both Before I'm Gone by Girl in a Coma. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of Inside Out by Emmy Rossum and Both Before I'm Gone by Girl in a Coma. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2007 Preview: November

November 1st, 2007

After a horrible October, we finally get to November and the start of the holiday season. Just like the summer season doesn't officially begin until Memorial Day, the winter holiday season doesn't officially begin until the Thanksgiving long weekend. However, studios are trying to stretch the lucrative box office season as long as possible and the holiday-like releases start during the first weekend of the month. This means practically every weekend this month, there's at least one potential $100 million movie. There are also a few that might be Oscar contenders, although not as many as I had expected. In fact, so far Award Season has been particularly slow, but at least this means there should be more buzz surrounding the upcoming films as the race is wide open. More...

The shaded area represents the expected performance range for a film, based on its opening weekend box office. 95% of films fall within the shaded area. If a film trends towards the top end of the shaded area, it has good legs compared to the average film; if it trends towards the bottom end of the shaded area, it has poor legs. The predictive area is based on movies from the past 5 years.
