Awards Season: Avatar Not Hurting for Oscar Nominations

February 2nd, 2010

Oscar nominations were announced at 5:38 this morning, continuing a tradition that have never been adequately explained to me. (Why so early in the morning? Does earning an Oscar nomination become sweeter if people have to wake you up to congratulate you?) Leading the way in nominations were Avatar and The Hurt Locker, both of which pick up nine nods each, many of them in the same categories. More...

DVD Releases for August 11th, 2009 - Part II

August 11th, 2009

It was a hard slog to get through the spotlight reviews this week. I live in Abbotsford, and this was the weekend of the Abbotsford Air Show and the constant stream of jets flying overhead made it nearly impossible to watch movies at times. (Do you know how loud you have to be to drown out Cutthroat Island?) As for this week's list of home market releases, there are a number that are worth picking up, but none that are must haves, and none rise to the level of DVD Pick of the Week. However, while there are no DVD Picks of the Week, there are enough reviews that the list had to be split into two with the first part found here More...

Furious Weekend on the Per Theater Chart

April 7th, 2009

The overall box office leader, Fast and Furious, was also the leader on the Per Theater Chart with an average of $20,500 during its opening weekend. Enlighten Up! returned to the chart in second place with $16,161 in second place. Valentino: The Last Emperor doubled its theater count, again, but remained strong with an average of $14,196 in four theaters. Strong buzz helped Gigantic earn $10,294 in its lone theater. Tulpan failed to reach $10,000 over the weekend with an opening of $8,620 in one theater; however, adding in Wednesday and Thursday and it made $10,357. More...

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of April 3rd, 2009

April 4th, 2009

This was a better than average week in terms of websites with only one movie not having a site, and only one site being below average. At the top, Adventureland's Official Site had all the usual feature, plus lots of extras, and did the best job of selling me on the movie. More...

Invading Limited Release

April 3rd, 2009

An eccletic bunch of limited releases this week including a Sci-Fi spoof, a Christian thriller, a baseball drama, and even Alia Shawkat's second prom movie in as as many years. There are only a couple movies on this list that have a shot at significant expansion, but a few others could do well on the home market. More...
